December 23, 201411 yr Moderator For those that have a fully built FSX and don't want to rebuild to SE, I wonder if you could install SE to another HD or computer, then take the guts or core of SE that don't get overwritten by addons and drop them into FSX? If the new objects that were newly recompiled are supposed to be better performance wise, why not use the SE core parts and put them into an existing FSX install, making sure of course to backup the originals? I'd be willing to by the SE version and basically use it for parts in my existing FSX install if they are supposed to be more efficient. I'm guessing this would include all the stock .dlls, base world .bgls for terrain and buildings, etc. Thoughts? Anyone thinking this or has experimented already? If possible it would be a cheap and easy way to update an existing FSX install without having to start from scratch. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
December 23, 201411 yr Along a similar vein. If one installs FSX:SE alongside an existing FSX installation (dual mode), is it possible within the FSX:SE scenery config, to simply point entries to where the scenery exists elsewhere on the HD, even if folders are within the existing FSX install? E.g. I have VFR GenX UK photo scenery already installed in FSX and would not wish to reinstall in FSX:SE as it would take up unnecessary disk space? Cheers Stuart

And if you are using add-ons like FTX, GEX, UTX, most of those textures and so on are replaced in any case. Also by doing it the way you suggest you'd lose one of the potential benefits of FSX-SE, that of automatic updates if or when they make further improvements. What I have done is made every single entry in my SCENERY.CFG file, point to the respective sceneries by using the full path -- i.e. drive, folder etc. I can thereby use the same SCENERY.CFG file for both products, so they are both using the exact same sceneries and textures. You can do the same for all aircraft, all simobjects, by using the full paths for SimObjects in the FSX.CFG and FSX-SE CFG files. The only things you'd have to copy between each as far as I can see are the Gauges and Effects. Even the DLl.XML and EXE.XML files can contain full paths. December 23, 201411 yr Thanks Pete, for the prompt response. I thought that should be the case. I haven't yet installed FSX:SE, as I am away for Xmas, but didn't want to have to reinstall sceneries etc. BTW, I presume I can have FSUIPC installed in both FSX and FSX:SE, without conflict, and using the same existing registration? Cheers, Stuart

The installer will even copy across your existing registration. Pete Win10: 22H2 19045.2728 CPU: 9900KS at 5.5GHz Memory: 32Gb at 3800 MHz. Pete What I have done is moved my "Addon Scenery" folder OUT of the FSX directory and put it on a separate partition on my larger SSD and then mounted that volume in the empty Addon Scenery folder in the FSX ditectory. I have also done this with the OrbX folder as it was'growing' beyond the bounds of my smaller FSX SSD. I could, if I chose to, move my entire "SimObjest" folder to another partiton and do the same mounting procedure but that folder doesn't take as much room as the scenery folders. I used this tecnique to 'share' Addon Scenery and OrbX folders between my Win7 FSX and my Xp FSX when my machine was running a dual-boot config. Paul
