With the collapsing price of 4K monitors and UHDTVs I feel I need to explore this option before deciding on a new monitor as the cost is now little different from other possibilities.  I have recently seen 40 inch UHDTVs in Australia for less than $1000.  This would be the same size as the  HDTV that I use currently for FSX but with a much higher display resolution.  However, I don't feel I fully understand the pros and cons of 4K when it comes to FSX and its fellow travelers FSX SE and P3D. In particular how much of an impact on perfomance would 4K have in comparison with say 1080P or 1440P and also to what extent does 4K affect VAS in FSX4.

Grateful for any observations

I went from 1440p to 4K and saw approx 20% reduction in FPS in most scenarios.

In very dense cloud it was a little worse, I sim on P3Dv2.4 so even at lower frames all is still smooth.

Adjust your quality sliders to compensate, and I find I can maintain 20- 30 FPS in most ground environments and 40-50 FPS in the air. I mainly fly Majestic Q400, Aerosoft Airbus for heavies and A2A and Realair for GA flying.

I'm running a 4670K @ 4.4Ghz and GTX 780 3Gb.

I got the new Philips BDM4065UC 40" 4K monitor - couldn't go back to anything less now. Simming @ 4K is stunning!

p.s. I didn't notice any difference at all in VAS usage after going to 4K

I am just wondering how you guys set up these larger 4K monitors. How far back from the eyes do you place them? I now use a 22" at about an arms length away in my home cockpit. Just thinking about my next upgrade and how to set things up.

You'll take a hit in FPS for sure.  You might want to check how the 4K monitor operates/looks at other lower resolutions if the FPS hit is a big concern.

I'm about 3 feet away from my Sony 4K ... it's only 49".

Cheers, Rob.

I use a 4k screen with a 780ti graphics card, which although quite powerful, is limited to a 30Hz refresh rate at 4K.

I don't find it an issue, as mostly flying tube-liners the scenery isn't changing rapidly, except it can be prone to stutters with large turns on the ground at pay-ware airports - but is still perfectly usable.

Yea....I am not a big fan of the really large screen TV's. I am afraid that being 3 or more feet away from the screen kind of detracts from that feeling of "being" in the cockpit. That said, I am not into the tube liners at all. GA Single or twin at most. For me, I am wondering if maybe something  like a 30 inch HD or UHD may be better. Love to hear you guys thoughts and experience.

OK thanks guys for your comments.  I take it VAS is not a major concern with 4K.  A follow up question -  what manner of gpu do you need to run 4k in particular if you like to use FTX class scenery and PMDG class aircraft and often together.  I have seen posts from folk who seem to run 4K with quite modest gpus (eg 660) but other posts indicating the need for dual 980s.  I currently have a 770 4gb would I need an upgrade for 4K?

Thanks

Bruce since you have a GTX770 you should try enabling 4K DSR in the nvidia control panel.

This is almost exactly the same as connecting a real 4K monitor to your system.

The performance drop you see with 4K DSR will tell you what will happen with a real 4K screen.

Edit: A real 4K screen might give slightly better results than 4K DSR

since there is no 4K to native screen resolution down-scaling involved.

Currently the two "best" GPU's for running 4K in flight sims would either be a GTX 780/780Ti or GTX Titan.

Your GTX 770 isn't far behind so if you decide to go 4K, get the screen first and see what kind of performance you can achieve before upgrading GPU (or not).

The GTX 970 and 980 have a reduced 256-bit memory bus which causes memory compression at UHD resolutions.

As far as dual GPU's are concerned, the is currently no SLI or crossfire support for FSX or Prepar3D, so dual GPU's is completely useless for simming. However, there is a rumor that Nvidia are talking to Lockheed Martin behind the scenes to implement driver support and possibly SLI support for P3Dv2.
