I don't know Peter. IMOP I think that was one of the worst 747 landings I have seen in a while (mine being the exception of course). Take a look again. I bet he was still coming down at 100fpm when he hit.

Thanks, Ron Fields

I watched it pass over my office about 1 mile from landing with the RH wing gear still clearly stuck.

I don't think you can really judge the landing until you've been there and done that (for real). Yes there was a bounce, but from what I've been reading (on pprune) it was most likely a failure of  HYD 4 system which, among other things, affects the right outboard elevator resulting in 25% reduction in pitch authority for starters.

The R/H main gear failed to deploy fully because the aircraft had lost one of the 4 hydraulic systems. That same hydraulic failure caused a limitation in the amount of elevator authority - one of the four elevators was not functioning at all - which probably accounted at least in part for the rather "firm" touchdown.

Also, I had read that the pilot deliberately used a firmer than normal touchdown with the bounce in an attempt to dislodge the stuck R/H landing gear.

100fpm  where did you get this from,  as the above posters have suggested you don't know anything  what was happening in the cockpit  to make your comment.  In fact any landing  that results in no injury or  damage to the aircraft is  a good landing

I did not investigate and have been corrected. I should have known better. At Nellis we would have a couple of IFE's a day. If you did not know what was going on (as has been said) you could not judge the outcome.

Sorry,

Ron
