January 10, 201511 yr Hi there, I have flown tonight to Sydney and was surprised to discover GLS approaches in place. Last time I flew to YSSY they were not. As far as I understand after few researches on internet, to use that system, the aircrafts have to be equipped with a multi receiver? If it is right, is there a plan from PDMG to implement that system on their addons (or may be it is irrelevant to flight sim)? Thanks. Romain Roux Avec l'avion, nous avons inventé la ligne droite. January 10, 201511 yr It's still such a new system that I think it will take time to see it gain ground in the real world let alone FlightSim. It does look to be very promising however, so time will tell. i7-13700KF, 32gb DDR4 3200, RTX 4080, Win 11, MSFS 2024
January 10, 201511 yr While PMDG might be able to include a receiver in their add-ons, there has to be something to receive. The system in itself so new, I don't know whether implementing it in FSX is even a possibility, within the scope of what scenery developers are allowed to do with/for it. Name available upon request
January 10, 201511 yr I don't think it's in wide usage yet, UAL and Quantas are starting to use it. The B747-8 and B787 have GBAS (Ground Based Augmentation System) receivers and an option on B737NG's according to this FAA FAQ sheet: http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ato/service_units/techops/navservices/gnss/faq/laas/?print=go I know KEWR has GLS and according to above article Houston is also a test bed. Current GLS (US) are CAT I and they are using the test beds to evaluate CAT III application. As far as implementation in a simulator, I can't imagine anything extra as long a performance indications are available. For the B737 with IAP option I assume the simulation would be identical. Eventually (i.e. at least a decade in FAA terms) they will be able to eliminate the costly ground based ILS equipment. Believe me, that stuff is expensive to set up, maintain and recurring flight checks cost money. Dan Downs KCRP
January 10, 201511 yr Author Hi, Thanks for these information. I didn't think of the fact that the sceneries had to be modified to include also the GLS... So it is of course useless to have aircrafts equipped with the proper receiver if we can't use them. I hope that fsx may one day be upgraded with that system and that aircrafts and sceneries will implement it as well in their addons. Romain Roux Avec l'avion, nous avons inventé la ligne droite. January 10, 201511 yr I didn't think of the fact that the sceneries had to be modified to include also the GLS They don't, just as the simulated aircraft have GPS but there are no satellites in the FSX sky. The ground based equipment used for WAAS or GBAS augmentation is part of that simulation. Unlike a LOC or GS signal, nothing is required by the simulated aircraft because it already "knows" exactly where it's at in the FSX world and all that is nice to have is a simulated error. Just as you can fly a RNP approach without the WAAS simulated in the scenery, you can fly the EWR GLS with the B737 using the IAP option. Dan Downs KCRP
