I see no way of overcoming your issue. You have stated about everything possible that could be a fix to your problem. You state you have 1.3GB's of VAS remaining which, I assume, is your way of saying it was not lack of VAS that caused your crash so don't even bring it up. You saved your flight BEFORE the error occurred (how did you know the error was going to occur?) then restarted the saved flight and the same thing happened... CTD.

I have been suffering the same issues as you have with a sudden loss of VAS at approach time and then possibly a crash. In my case, I had 1.3GB's of VAS at the beginning of the approach and about 300MB's of VAS remaining near touchdown. In my case I am blaming it on the commercial addon airport that I'm trying to land at. Plus, as you near the ground, more and more textures have to be rendered. Your best solution would be to pause your sim at the top of the approach, go into your P3D settings and move ALL of the sliders to the left. Turn off any eye-candy. Then run the approach and land.

It's not P3D's fault. P3Dv2.5 will run great even with high settings with the default scenery and default aircraft. It's when you throw on the addons that things change (and that's not P3D's fault; it is the developer of the addon's fault for not ensuring complete compatibility with P3D). I think addon scenery has to be developed so that one can use it with the sliders full right because almost everyone flies with high settings, with settings full right as they want the best graphics and eye-candy possible. I mean, you pay $40 plus for a product, you would expect that product to work no matter what the settings in P3D (or FSX). If the product does not work, then it is not compatible.

I may sound frustrated here but I'm getting tired of testing and trying to find the product or products that are causing P3D to crash. In my case I think I found the fault of my problems and that's enabling too much eye-candy (photoscenery). Okay. No more photoscenery. Just the default. Lower the settings a bit more. Don't make things as crisp and clear anymore as the objective is to go from Point A to Point B without crashing no matter what the sim looks like. If I get another crash though, what's next? My FSDT/Flightbeam airports? ASN? REX4? PMDG aircraft? Something is going to have to go...

I hope Spring arrives soon. I need to get out and golf...

I can certainly relate to that! Love the game, and I always feel anxious at this time of year, thinking that the cold, snow and ice will NEVER go away. My clubs are ready to go and do am I!

Just an update. I returned my settings to the default. I have an i7 4770K w/the GTX780 and the default settings seemed to work well. Only complaint was the fact it completely turned off all AI so guess I will have to be careful with this setting should I decide to turn on AI (road vehicles were turned off too). I thought I had a powerful system but I do not.

I just ran the flight again from Chicago to KIAD (Wash Dulles). FPS locked at 20 and stayed there. VAS stayed at around 1.3GB's. I had ASN turned on and used ProATC. No problems landing at Dulles but I do plan on using an extreme weather theme and try again. This is the way it is going to be for me. The PMDG777 looked great in the VC and held fps at 20. It was crisp and clear. P3D has great default scenery so I'm not going to get upset over not being able to use my photoscenery. I do plan on bringing back AI and may up the Texture_Max_Load from 1024 to at least 2048. Flying the PMDG was fun using the default settings and it was great to be able to land. I understand my limitations now.

To OP: I strongly suggest you return your P3D settings to the default or turn them down dramatically. You will have more fun.

Try saving a settings profile with all sliders turned down (or save different profiles) and experiment with what your system can handle. Also turn off AI traffic until you land.

Cheers

Good ideas!  Thanks!

Hey Jim I'm new to P3d with specs very near yours (same processor but a 660Ti).

I too thought I had to eliminate all  AI to get frames acceptable ( I haven't had any lockups with P3d yet...or expect to, fingers crossed).  My fault, in this case, was installing ALL the AI from a install package that is scorned around here, but I had great success with in FSX:SE.  Since P3d is not officially supported by it (neither is SE for that matter), I manually installed it like I did in SE...that is where the trouble began.

In short...removed it, faked the WOAI installer into believing that P3d is the FSX path, and went on to selectively install the AI I really needed (I don't have much use for Phucket Air 2013 full schedule flying mostly in the states, LoL)...flying out of KDFW, AA, USAir, United, Delta, sure!

That method has worked great for me so far, and as I type enjoying a perfectly smooth flight out of DFW with Ai set to 50% and AA planes all over the place, with a pinch of Delta, UAL and USA.

Oh, and I have textures at 2048 and running well.

Good luck with your settings!  Dial everything into the sim incrementally (as I'm going to do from now on), and I think you'll get it to the level you'll be happy with in a few iterations.

Good luck with your settings!

Thanks Steve.  I'm all finished tweaking and just flying now.  Everything is at the default except I turned AI up to 20% (which is what it has always been set at).  I get great fps with the default settings and lots of VAS at the end.
