June 15, 200520 yr Well, Megascenery, VFR Photographic etc. do include a mesh but you can easily find 30m mesh for free on the net. What these sceneries do is that they drape actual aerial or satellite photographs over this mesh. This gives you a 100% accurate, albeit "flat" rendition of the landscape.Ultimate Terrain is mesh, vector data and landclass. Not as accurate as photoreal, but fully 3D, and takes up less drive space. -
June 15, 200520 yr First of all , my knowledge of mesh and scenery is pretty poor. I purchased Misty Fjords and UT Canada/Alaska awhile back, and I also purchased FS Genisis mesh for the same regions. Doesn't the FS Genesis mesh compliment UT scenery, or is it just duplicating what UT already does, and wasn't really necessary?
June 15, 200520 yr A problem with photo scenery, aside from performance issues, is that it doesn't always line up well with the adjoining terrain. The advantage of using a Ultimate Terrain, Free Flow, American Data - style product is that the terrain features should connect smoothly to the photo tiles.scott s..
June 15, 200520 yr So then my question is pretty much in a nutshell... Let's say you want to start with the U.S. and work your way out..So for the most realistic scenery and as far as almost being there...I.E. so to speak lets say Ultimate Terrain is out for the U.S. The best combo to go with for mountain detail and scenery etc...Would be what?Would Ultimate Terrain U.S. and FS Genesis Terrain and lets say some of the Megascenery Denver Colorado.. Make Denver about as much to real life as I could get her besides being there? Thanks For Your Knowledge And Help,
June 15, 200520 yr Please forgive me if this seems like a dumb question. As far a a realistic as possible landscape that pretty much involves the mesh is that correct?I was wondering if that MegaScenery-VFR is any good for anyone that has experienced it or knows someone who has it.And besides the MegaScenery VFR, like the others such as the Dallas, and Denver Colorado has anyone experienced those and like them?I was thinking when Ultimate Terrain comes out with their U.S. version and also adding some Megascenery scenes that would probably be the cream of the crop.. Later,
June 15, 200520 yr That does look very nice, Ray, but could you please clarify? I thought that your "shareware" as you call it in fact requires paying for access to the files. So that it is not "free" ware at all. Although from what I remember, once having paid, access is unlimited to your files. Is that it?By the way, Ray, there is no need for an alias. We all know, respect, and like you.Best regards.Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
June 15, 200520 yr My totally uneducated guess is that its EITHER/OR with Meagascenery or Ultimate terrain because they both do mesh and textures. If thats true (could be completely wrong here), then Ultimate Terrain, with its autogen features may be better for flying into airports.I have UK VFR and IMHO it is best used for sightseeing over the countryside but probably not as good as Ultimate Terrain for landing at airports. I can only guess the same applies to Megascenery titles being that they are photoreal sceneries Would be interesting to hear what an owner of a Megascenery/Ultimate terrain thinks?CheersDan
June 15, 200520 yr Roger that Dan, Yeah I am jonsing for Ultimate Terrain to come out with that U.S. version. Especially from all the good things said about it for Canada and Alaska...See where I am getting a little confused is... Mesh for example helps enhance things such as terrain like makes the mountains more crisp and sharper etc... Is that correct? So what I am picking up off of this is.... I will not need to purchase a mesh when Ultimate Terrain comes out with their U.S. version cause their will already be a mesh include?Yeah... I am really curious... I would love to see a screenshot with an Ultimate terrain and MegaScenery Combo... Ugh Ultimate Terrain bring it bring them goods my direction... :) Happy Landings,
June 15, 200520 yr Hi Josh.,I think Ultimate Terrain will take care of your mesh no problem. Mesh is essentially the 'shape' of the land such as mountains, valleys, flatlands, hills etc. Some people have UT with FSGenesis for even more accurate mesh data.Photoscenery is obviously quite accurate in this area although you lose out on autogen scenery and low level flying etc.I find that with photoscenery you need a lot of addon autogen when flying into an airport (or flying low) and Ultimate Terrain does that, plus it has good night lighting effects. But for higher altitude flying (sightseeing) photoreal is hard to beat, although a bit framerate intensive. Personally i am going to try UTerrain Canada/Alaska and also one of the Megascenery titles for fun.Cofusing sometimes!CheersDan :-)
June 15, 200520 yr On the FS Genesis web site, it specifically states that it works with Ultimate Terrain Alaska/ Canada. I have this combination installed on my system and it looks fantastic. http://portal.fsgenesis.net/

June 16, 200520 yr I personally think photorealistic scenery is only nice when you actually know the place: recognizing things is fun! But that's about it... I've flown above various photorealistic add-ons but it just doesn't work for me. It's just not real (OF COURSE!) The perspective is always wrong: seeing 'buildings' far away 'from the top' is very strange... and shadows are usually on the side where you should not be able to see them... It's all very weird. Also, it's always way to obvious you are flying above a flat photograph... which is scanned bad, at a too low resolution... It only emphasizes the fact that what you see is NOT real. It's fake! And when you get low is really gets bad... The worst part is when they add 3D-buildings on top of it... they realle never ever fit there. The contrast is too big. Awful. And yes, I've even flown above the MegaCity Dallas, which is quit good in comparison to some other add-ons. But I got the same comments on that one, so...But of course that's just my humble opinion... ;) And I have to say that I still don't know what to do when Horizontal's VRF add-on of the Netherlands will be released... As I said, it IS nice when you KNOW the surrounding. I'd love to see my own house down there, even though it is probably splashed together with my neigbours houses into one flat pixel... ;)
June 16, 200520 yr Author I am thinking of getting the Horizon's Neatherlands scenary.I was in Maastrich about a month ago. I would like to fly from London to Amsterdam and then to Maastricht.I actually wanted to fly for real when I there..Didn't have the time...or know any FBO at the Maastrich airport. There were a few Shuttle companies who could fly you to Amsterdam or Bruzzles etc...... I would have liked to have had an entry in my log book. Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
June 27, 200520 yr Ultimate Terrain, despite the name, has NO terrain mesh. Only roads, coastlines, etc. (terrain FEATURES).The FS Genesis stuff, that is free, is really good.
