March 30, 201511 yr I have the boxed FSX on my main drive but I am running out of room, can I run FSX-SE on a external drive through a USB plug? Or is that USB a bottleneck?
March 30, 201511 yr Worst bottleneck among all possible bottlenecks. 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days

March 30, 201511 yr Might depend upon the version of USB port? The latest is v3 and it's speeds are quite good. The plugs are blue, btw. If it's v2.0 or earlier, I wouldn't try. The other external option is if you had an eSATA port and an external drive with that interface. My eSata drives perform quite well, comparable to the internal drives.
March 30, 201511 yr I have run both FSX boxed and FSX SE on a 10,000 RPM USB 3.0 Western Digital Velociraptor external drive and both worked fine. (The drive is mounted in an Anker USB 3.0 SATA docking station). There was no noticeable difference vs. my 7200 RPM internal drives. But, I wouldn't try it with anything less than the Velociraptor. An expensive solution but it works well. It's much cheaper to just get a larger internal drive.
