After being spoiled by the smooth performance, volumentric fog and cloud shadows I couldn't go back to FSX.

There's lots to be done with P3D but at least they're working on it slowly unlike MS.

I bought P3D about 6 weeks ago figuring I would use it alongside FSX (DX10).  Well, I haven't used FSX once since I installed P3D.  I did make the mistake of trying to make too many tweaks and changes and ended up having to start with a clean .cfg 2 days ago since I got to the point my performance had slowed and was getting pauses every 8-10 seconds.  I now have it running smoothly again with only a few minimal changes to NVI and adjusting my sliders in P3D.  PMDG NGX runs at high 30's over a my dense test area in P3D vs the same area in FSX which was low 20's at best.  I'd say go for it!
