New TNCM scenery in the Avsim library! I just got it and it is outstanding. Well done Delblond Christian! :)KP

Hello Ken,It is very nice, isn't it? He has done many other great projects, of which you can find a good number in the AvSim library.By the way, Christian's Christian name is... Christian! It is just that in many parts of the world the surname is listed first.Best regards.Luis

To prevent loss of frame rates, simply compress the textures to DXT format, if you know how. Also, do not forget to add an alpha channel for the transparent textures. After having done this, my frame rate loss is minimal with this scenery. And it is very nice.Best regards.Luis

How did you do it? I attempted to using Image Tool and converted all textures to DXT3 and it made no difference, plus then some textures had black squares around them. Any help here would be appreciated.

Hello Kurt,DXT3 is not particularly smaller than uncompressed textures, so you will not see much of a difference.Simple Guide to Converting all your Scenery Textures to DXT Format and Preserving Your Frame RatesFirst thing that I do with any add-on, scenery or aircraft, is check the textures and convert to DXT. Why? Because excessively large textures, and too many of them, are the principal cause of low frame rates (and not the quantity of polygons, as many believe, although they are also important).1. Get Martin Wright's ConvIm (Image Format Converter Program) and his DXTBmp program, both available on his web site. Also, do not forget the necessary dlls that he provides. Install everything to a folder of your choice.2. In the same folder as the Texture folder that you want to compress, create a new folder and call it, for example, Compressed Textures.3. Scenery is not compressed to DXT3 format. Rather, it usually is compressed to DXT1. This format is smaller and has a simple transparency, all that is needed for scenery. The first thing to do is to batch-convert all the textures to DXT1 format. With ConvIm, navigate to the Texture folder that you wish to compress.4. Make sure (1) to select All Image Files, (2) to select All the textures so that they are all compressed, (3) to choose the correct image format, as there are a bunch in there, but it should be FS70 DXT1 Bitmap, (4) to choose the Destination folder, and (5) to click on Convert.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123219.jpg5. This will have converted all the textures to DXT1, but without the transparent parts. What is a transparency? It is a flag for certain parts of the texture that tells FS not to display it. It is customary to color the transparent parts in pure black (that is, Red, Green, Blue values of 0,0,0) and we can use DXTBmp to interpret all black parts of the texture as transparent and to create the DXT1 format image correctly.First, take a look at the textures with ConvIm and decide which ones should have a transparent part. It is generally easy to see, as they will often be trees or people surrounded by black, or hangars with open doors painted black.6. Launch DXTBmp and open the original texture in the Texture folder, not the converted image in the Compressed Textures folder.7. DXTBmp is quite easy to use. It will create the transparency from any black part in the image. And if there is no black, or if it is not pure black, then it sends the image to an image editing program, where you can paint it black, and then retrieves that modified image and converts it to DXT format. You can use Adobe Photoshop as your image editing program if you have it (and you must be rich!), or Jasc PaintShop Pro, or you could even use Windows Paint, if you prefer. So, in DXTBmp, go to the Alpha menu and select Create Alpha Channel (Black). The alpha channel is the transparent part and it will appear in the small box at the top right. To see how it looks, click on the magnifying glass. If it is fine, then you can save your new image. But, often it is not quite right.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123220.jpg8. When you do not get a good result, you will have to edit the image. Double-click on the image to send it to your image editing program. Here, select all the parts that should be transparent and paint them pure black (RGB 0,0,0). Save and close.9. Retrieve that modified image in DXTBmp by clicking on the Refresh after Edit button on the bottom of the window. Go back to the Alpha menu and Create Alpha Channel again. Everything should now be good. Now, you can save the image.10. There are 2 types of DXT1 formats, one without transparent parts (no alpha) and one that has them. You will be saving your image with alpha, so be sure to choose the right format and also save the new image in the Compressed Textures folder.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123221.jpg11. Once you have converted and saved all your textures, rename your Texture folder, to, for example, Textures uncompressed, and your Compressed Textures folder to Texture. Go fly and see the difference. For any questions, please do not hesitate to ask in the Scenery Design forum.Best regards.Luis
