Orbx FTX Norway: P3Dv3 UPDATE (only!) path available

Featured Replies

What does this cryptic title mean?

Well firstly, there has been no announcement from ORbx of any update to bring NOR to P3Dv3 compatibility just yet.......... so if that is a red flag to you; I'd advise to read no further. :)

However...... desperate to get back into FTX Norway yesterday, I decided to try installing my base NOR installer into P3Dv3.    I used the Migration Tool, selected "P3D 2.X" from the installation path options, and completed the installation.

Before loading NOR in P3Dv3, I opened FTX Central 2, and it immediately prompted for an update to P3D NOR. When I ran the update, I was surprised to see that it's installer included a proper installation path option for P3Dv3.

I completed the update, loaded up P3Dv3 and went up to Norway - and as far as I can see, everything works perfectly.

So to clarify - this is not (as far as I can see) an update that is available to download seperately from the Orbx site, or Flight Sim Store - this was only available by FTX Central 2's integrated update function.

But it was fully featured for a P3Dv3 installation option.

Unfortunately, as the Orbx installers do not allow manual installation path changes, the only way that I can see that people can install their base NOR installer into v3, is using the Migration Tool.

I'm sure Orbx will release NOR for P3Dv3 soon, but I was desperate, and it was interesting to see the update functionality for v3 in place.  :)

I know the feeling, I felt the same about the GTN. Tempted to try your method, but my luck- well, nah, not yet. Glad it worked tho!

Please remember that use of the EMT on ORBX products is NOT supported by ORBX. If something goes wrong, and it certainly may, you are on your own.

It is HIGHLY recommended to wait for official installers.

I managed to do a full install of Norway and New Zealand, by changing the Prepar3D v3 installation to read Prepar3D v2(after renaming my v2 install to something else), running the installer, then changing the folders back to the correct names. I then copied the terrain and scenery cfg from Prepar3D v2 Program Data to V3 Drogram Data.

FTX Central recognised the installation and made it 'active'.

There is an excellent youtube video on how to do this with all Orbx scenery until they have v3 installers.

FsCubed have also developed a Prepar3D v2.5 scenery backup program that can restore backed up scenery into Prepar3D v3, this also works fine.

The decision rests with the individual user but I feel that many are completely UNAWARE of the issues that *may* result from using these methods. If you are prepared to have your P3D install hosed and do a complete reinstall - that is your option.

Whether it was the fault of the user(s) or the software I cannot say, but I have had numerous help requests from people with serious issues after attempting certain manual installs.

That's certainly not going to go down well with the Politically Correct Simulation Authorities

I'm not sure I follow...I've just installed scenery to prepar3D v3. I'm aware they are as yet, not supported, so as a result no support is offered, nor am I requesting any. It's a stop gap until the v3 installers are available. Orbx have said that they will update and release v3 installers in the coming months. What exactly is the issue by doing this.

Absolutely no issue, you are aware you are on your own if something goes wrong.  Some on these boards, the self appointed "Politically Correct Simulation Authorities" just like something to constantly fuss and moan about ha

Allen, flight sim lover and AA-5 Traveler owner

When commercial products are installed in P3Dv3, whether with an installer or without an installer, P3Dv3 could crash or freeze or run out of VAS faster than normal and many other things could happen.  An official installer from the developer will help make the product more compatible with P3Dv3 but that is no guarantee too.  Usually after customers (users) run the program many times, a developer will issue an update to fix a bug found.  Many of the addons were made for previous versions of P3D or FSX or FS9 and not fully tested with P3Dv3. Sure they might work great for a while but, when our members install addons, with or without an official installer, they should understand clearly it could be one of the addons causing the CTD/Freeze, so you install an addon at your own risk.  Most of the CTD's and freezes I have seen in the AVSIM CTD Forum (and throughout the Flight Simulation Community) were as a result of addons and not the sim itself (improper installation of the sim or addon are the other causes).  Usually, when the user returned his/her sim back to the default settings, the crashes or freezes stopped.  The individual then had to investigate which addon caused the problem (the dll.xml is not part of the default installation of any simulator) and then find a solution from that developer for fixing the problem.

I think P3Dv3 runs great by itself but realize everyone is anxious to get their favorite scenery or aircraft installed.  Fortunately for me, I kept all of my v2 scenery installed (all payware) and simply reconnected the scenery in the v3 scenery.cfg.  So far I have been lucky with no problems but, if I do have a crash or freeze, I know it is most likely the addon.  Unfortunately, you can't relink with FTX/Orbx products as there are many other things installed like their utility to return your scenery back to the default if you want.  This is why I think you should wait for their installer.  I think the developers at FTX/Orbx just want to make sure their products work well in the new sim before releasing an installer.  If you do get it installed w/o waiting, then I hope you and others do not complain to LM or FTX/Orbx (or any other addon developer) should the sim crash or it freezes up mid-flight or during startup.

Lastly, it sort of upsets me when I see commercial developers who do not provide instructions for reinstalling their products into a new sim and our members come here to seek advice from an "expert".   I think the developer is doing it for a reason as they want to make sure a product is compatible first.  What I do is keep FSX on my system so, if I want to fly in an area where a developer has not created a new installer for v3 yet, I can still use the scenery in another sim.  Works for me!
