Aerosim Tristar - Opinions?

Featured Replies

I've seen plenty of pics of the new Aerosim Tristar in the screenshot forum, but I can't seem to find any user feedback or opinions on this aircraft. How is it? I'm a Tristar fan and have been waiting for a good FS Tristar for years now. I can see from the screenshots the 3D model is very good, but what about the rest? How is the flight model and panel? I'm particularly interested in the INS/FMS system. How well are the systems modelled? Is there an overhead panel? Can you perform a realistic startup procedure? Have Aerosim modelled the Direct Lift Control (DLC) featured on the real aircraft? Thanks in advance for any feedback.Nick

Yes, I'm fascinated by the Aerosim TriStar as well! Does it have a "no-VC" option? I want to use it in FS2002 for the time being :D

The Aerosim Tristar is pretty good and I like it a lot.The DLC is not modeled and I don't think the autospoilers work either. I think it had autospoilers? Maybe not.......The FMS/INS is okay too. But the INS only repeats the waypoints in the flight plan. And the flight plan is built using Notepad and is rather time consuming. You need to put in the LAT/LONG in decimal degrees with a 3 letter indentifier. Just read the manual and you will figure it out. I use NAVData to look up the LAT/LONG of the fix and copy and paste it. You can using a Flight Planning program like FSBuild to get your routing and then go from there. You cannot build a flight plan using the INS like the CIVA freeware INS. This INS only give you information on the current waypoint. The FMS once connected to the autopilot works very well. It flys a beautiful ILS approach from capture to touchdown. The panel isn't too bad either, although the numbers on the engine instruments might drive you a little crazy. They are continiously moving which is a little annoying. Although you can swap out some of the gauges with others like the ADI and Engine Instruments if you want. The HSI has to stay as it works with the FMS.The autoland function does not work either. The aircraft flys nicely and is it worth $35? I like it and am glad I bought it as I've been looking for a good Tristar too. I've only flown it with my laptop and haven't used a joystick. No real overhead panel and I haven't tried a cold and dark cockpit yet. There is not a No VC or VC option as far as I know? You have to use a HEX Editor to remove the VC if you don't want it. The VC is pretty basic compared to PMDG............They could have added more paints to the program too, too few airlines for $35. Hope I answered most of your questions and maybe someone else can add to this? One other thing is I would like to see them set up a FORUM! The sooner the better.Hollister

Hi,Ofcourse it has autospoilers. :-)Don

Staffan,Nicely said............Yes, it does have autospoilers, the handle just doesn't move to the an armed position, but they do extend on landing. The more I fly this L-1011 the more I like it.Have you found an easier way to load a flight plan? It can take about 15 to 30 minutes to build one using their format and notepad, but that's just part of the preflight planning I guess. It would be nice to share flight plans with other users. Maybe post the ones they made up. That's an idea!I don't see an APU modeled either or did I miss it?One other thing, I am getting a lot of unnecessary throttle movement, back and forth............have you noticed this? What do you think of the climb rate of 4000 fpm fully loaded? Does this seem a bit high to you?BTW, Staffan if you find the time would you kindly consider doing a AIA, Kalitta Paint? I know they didn't operate the -100, only -200's, but..................Hope to hear more from other users of this fine FS9 Addon. PS. It sure flys a nice coupled ILS approach, one of the best I've seen. It's right on and that's one of the reasons I like this L-1011 so much. Plus the FMS/Autopilot intergration works great.

Staffan,I agree that it is not a bad package. I purchased it the other day, but have not had much time to test it out yet. Both the Tristar and DC-10 models are very good. I would like to put some suggestions to Aerosim, but if I click on the email address contact link, I get a web page entirely in Japanese! Which email address do you use?Graeme

Thes comments are for the Tristar only.Negs:No non VC optionNo flexing wingNo parallel bogie animationClimb rate a bit high IMHOSounds could be better IMHONo DLC (this is not really a negative just an observation)Pos:Divine models! both -100 and -500 (I would like to see a -200 added)FMS/INS (The main reason I bought the package)Engine start up effects on the -500 are superb! FDE is good ( climb rate a bit high) IMHOI think the VC is pretty good.Very frame rate friendly! Support has been praised by most (though I have had no replys to my emails) :(Now I'm a bit biased because no amount of money would have stopped me buying a Tristar model that looks this good and has a great simulation of her FMS/INS. :)But as it is one gets a load of other also very good a/c with VC's and INS's plus a load of adventures manuals etc.I would say a very good value for money package ... certainly the first purchase that left a huge smile on my face! :-hah the adventures are hilarious!I dunno this package just has the feeling of days gone by ...when flightsimming was more fun! :)

Thanks for the input everyone!I gather then that this aircraft is not at the same level as the LDS767 or PMDG747 or RFP747....That's a bit disappointing as the Tristar is the one aicraft I'd love to see done in lots of detail. However, there are some core features that I look for in an addon: good flight model (ie has the right "feel" and can be flown by hand), accurate panel layout with authentic looking instruments. Accurate autopilot and navigation systems.Does the Aerosim Tristar have these? At the moment I'm sitting on a ship in port in the UK - I'm away from home so can't use my unlimited broadband connection. Right now I'm using a 3G data card in my laptop and accessing the net via the mobile phone network. Problem is I have a data quota of 512mb per month, and the Aerosim package will take a hefty chunk out of my data quota. So the question is, bearing in mind all of the above, would you guys reccommend the Aerosim Tristar?

Nick

First I need to say that I was lucky and downloaded the OMWings L-1011 panel when it was available.I wrote to Aerosim and they explained me the content of their add-on package in more detail. The reason why I didn't buy is because Aerosim stated the product to be aimed to beginners and intermediate users. Not that this is a sign of bad quality, but I doubt that the systems simulated are anywhere near the OMWings panel. In addition, the OMWings panel has a basic FMS as well which can display an FS flightplan - very similar to the Aerosim package. But neither of the add-ons fully satisfies me, the price for the Aerosim package is a little high in my opinion, so I put my hope into PILOT's (hopefully) furthcoming Tristar...Andreas

Hi,If you use the Omwings panel with this Tristar, you get all the functions which comes with that panel. The thing you need to do, is to use the Aircraft.cfg file which comes with the panel, ment for the plane from Mike Stone. However, you need to use the following entries. Just copy and replace.Always remember that the ( + ) should be brackets.(flight_tuning)cruise_lift_scalar = 1.2parasite_drag_scalar = 0.92induced_drag_scalar = 1.0elevator_effectiveness = 1.3aileron_effectiveness = 1.4rudder_effectiveness = 1.3pitch_stability = 2.0roll_stability = 1.0yaw_stability = 1.0elevator_trim_effectiveness = 3.0aileron_trim_effectiveness = 1.0rudder_trim_effectiveness = 1.0(TurbineEngineData)fuel_flow_gain=0.002inlet_area=55.00rated_N2_rpm=29920.00static_thrust=42000.000000afterburner_available=0reverser_available=1(electrical)gear_motor=0, 5 , 17.0autopilot=0, 5 , 17.0avionics_bus=0, 10, 17.0avionics=1, 5 , 17.0pitot_heat=0, 2 , 17.0additional_system=0, 20, 17.0marker_beacon=1, 2 , 17.0gear_warning=0, 2 , 17.0fuel_pump=0, 5 , 17.0starter1=0, 20, 17.0light_nav=0, 5 , 17.0light_beacon=0, 5 , 17.0light_landing=0, 5 , 17.0light_taxi=0, 5 , 17.0light_strobe=0, 5 , 17.0light_panel=0, 5 , 17.0(flaps.0) //Inboard Trailing Edgetype=1 // 1 - tail, 2 - leadspan-outboard=0.2 // 0.0 .. 1.0extending-time=25 // secondsflaps-position.0=0 // degreesflaps-position.1=4 // degreesflaps-position.2=10 // degreesflaps-position.3=14 // degrees MODIFIEDflaps-position.4=18 // degreesflaps-position.5=22 // degreesflaps-position.6=27 // degreesflaps-position.7=33 // degreesflaps-position.8=42 // degreesdamaging-speed=260 // KIASblowout-speed=300 // KIAS//lift_scalar=0.50lift_scalar=0.60 // MODIFIEDdrag_scalar=0.75pitch_scalar=0.55system_type=1 //Hydraulic(flaps.1) //Outboard Trailing Edgetype=1 // 1 - tail, 2 - leadspan-outboard=0.8 // 0.0 .. 1.0extending-time=23 // secondsflaps-position.0=0 // degreesflaps-position.1=4 // degreesflaps-position.2=10 // degreesflaps-position.3=14 // degrees MODIFIEDflaps-position.4=18 // degreesflaps-position.5=22 // degreesflaps-position.6=27 // degreesflaps-position.7=33 // degreesflaps-position.8=42 // degreesdamaging-speed=260 // KIASblowout-speed=300 // KIAS//lift_scalar=0.30 lift_scalar=0.40 // MODIFIEDdrag_scalar=0.75pitch_scalar=0.35system_type=1 //Hydraulic(flaps.2) //Inboard Leading Edge Slatstype=2 // 1 - tail, 2 - leadspan-outboard=0.5 // 0.0 .. 1.0extending-time=4 // secondsflaps-position.0=0 // degreesflaps-position.1=0.8 // degreesflaps-position.2=0.8 // degreesflaps-position.3=0.8 // degreesflaps-position.4=0.8 // degreesflaps-position.5=0.8 // degreesflaps-position.6=0.8 // degreesflaps-position.7=0.8 // degreesflaps-position.8=0.8 // degrees MODIFIEDdamaging-speed=260 // KIASblowout-speed=300 // KIASlift_scalar=0.04drag_scalar=0.2pitch_scalar=0.05system_type=1 //Hydraulic(flaps.3) //Outboard Leading Edge Slatstype=2 // 1 - tail, 2 - leadspan-outboard=0.5 // 0.0 .. 1.0extending-time=4 // secondsflaps-position.0=0 // degreesflaps-position.1=1.0 // degreesflaps-position.2=1.0 // degreesflaps-position.3=1.0 // degreesflaps-position.4=1.0 // degreesflaps-position.5=1.0 // degreesflaps-position.6=1.0 // degreesflaps-position.7=1.0 // degreesflaps-position.8=1.0 // degrees MODIFIEDdamaging-speed=260 // KIASblowout-speed=300 // KIASlift_scalar=0.05drag_scalar=0.2pitch_scalar=0.05system_type=1 //Hydraulic(Radios)Audio.1=1Com.1=1, 1Com.2=1, 1Nav.1=1, 1, 1Nav.2=1, 1, 0Adf.1=1Transponder.1=1Marker.1=1(hydraulic_system)electric_pumps=0engine_map=1,1,1,0normal_pressure=3000.000000Note that there is one more flap notch added, inorder for the flaphandle to work properly.These changes makes all system work in the panel from Omwings, and makes the plane much more hardcore. ;-)Furthermore,...if you are more into hardcore, you can change the EPR and EGT values in the AIR file, to get more proper values, since those gauges are much more sensitive in the Omwings panel.Have fun now.....http://www.scandicair.com/images/Banner_douglas2.jpg

Yeah it looks ok, but more worth the money from the flightdeck, in that respect its the only reason i would buy it, well thats what a flight sim is all about isnt it, not really fussed what the outside looks like, as long as the cockpit looks and feels like a real TriStar. More FMC operations the better, no more rubbish default flight planning, no more spending hours trying to find a descent panel and sounds. Although im still wondering about Eric Cantu's TriStar. He is always surprising us with his great work and the model looks great, i must say better than aerosoft's. If he can put together an FMC for freeware or even payware for that matter, wow, i think i would rate him as the best designer around. The one im particularly anxious to fly is a Caledonian Airways TriStar. If i get that i will not be flying anything else for a long time.Mind you, is any airline Tristar not worth flying, er....i cant think of one lol.:-lol TRIJETS 4EVER

Ok, I think I was not clear enough in the post above. Those entries I listed, should be copied into the original Aircraft.cfg file which comes with the AeroSim plane. The entries listed comes from the cfg file which comes with Omwings panel, ment for Mike Stones Tristar. And inorder to get the VC gauges, you also need to copy all VC entries in the original Panel.cfg file into the Panel.cfg for the Omwings panel. So that should clear things up...;-)DON

My sentiments exactly. The flight deck and flight model are the two most important aspects of an addon aircraft for me.I'd love a fully functional Tristar addon with all the bells and whistles, and I'd especially love one in Caledonian livery. As a child our family holidays to Spain always started and ended on a Caledonian Tristar flying out of Gatwick. I remember being a wide eyed seven year old visiting the flight deck of one of those fantastic planes in the eighties. I've been hooked on aircraft and aviation ever since.
