The engines certainly come into play, however in this case it is the different efficiency of the wings and cross over that makes them more significant to the equation.  There was a terrfic article on this some years back. I looked for it and sadly I could not find it.  I may have it on an old hard drive, and if I can find it I'd be happy to send it along.

 

Any change to talk about the MD-80 family.  It's my favorite of all favorites!
