Why no effects with AI aircraft like contrails.

Featured Replies

Bob, as u can see few post above, where i put link to 2 of my photos.

Plane below was so close i almost could read airline name on fuselage, even though i could't see any contrails.

Plane below me was at FL390.

( Having TAT -21C and flying FL390 + speed over M=0.8, then OAT surely is -50C or more )

Thanks for the explanation regarding different ways expressing temp Bob, will try to keep it in mind this time

Did you get any answer from the devs of PrecipitFX yet because IIRC you also asked them about this issue?

No.

Created a post to see if they can make some weather themes to help with all of this confusion

PrecipitFX already provide weather themes to demo their effects ... if you aren't seeing those themes, then it sounds like your PrecipitFX install didn't work correctly.  At this point I'd suggest uninstalling PrecipitFX and then re-install ... but you'll need to check that it removes it's effects entries for the various aircraft.  I think the copying of files around may have "confused" PrecipitFX and I think it does backups of files prior to installing it's own ... in other words I think by copying "some" files around you may have created a hot mess.  If that is the case, then you'll need to re-install your AI traffic product also and make sure it was fully removed during uninstall.  Then re-install AI traffic product, then re-install PrecipitFX.

Typically uninstallers do NOT remove files and dirs that have been modified (I know LM don't, that's why a fresh P3D install requires manually removing any vestige of P3D in it's 5 dirs after the uninstall).

Cheers, Rob.

I know that Rob - Immersion is not installed brother - unless you have that installed you do not get any themes - that was my point

OK, I just uninstalled PrecipitFX using VFX central.    I checked some entries in the Aircraft.cfgs in My Traffic 6, and they were all removed, and left only the default effects that came with MT6.  I then checked the entries that had been inserted by Precipitifx  on some of the MT6 Boeing 737s that were missing the [effects] in the cfg, and they were also removed. So everything in MT6 was back to default. I then checked the effects folder in P3D, and the Precipit effects files were also removed, so that was back to default.  Now I reinstalled PrecipitFC , and then rechecked everything, and it was returned to it's previous state. Now I will have to fly it and see if anything has changed.

Looking forward to hear the result.

OK. I learned a few things today. First of all, I normally fly with those red AI display's off, since I hear it improves frame rates and doesn't look realistic anyway. After I reinstalled Precipitfx, I went a a 2 hour flight, and there wasn't a great deal of AI traffic, but there was a few aircraft. I turned the red indicators on, and looking at my map on ProATC X , I could see approximately where the AI aircraft were, and looked for them, and I found 3 , and they all had contrails. Now these were not heavy contrails that could be easily seen from a distance, more like puffy smoke contrails, but never the less they were there. There was a 747, and MD80 and a Airbus. After I landed in Boise, Idaho, I began looking  at the  different views when right clicking on the P3D screen while sitting in teh cockpit of my NGX. I had read on one of the threads that someone had gone to an AI aircraft, and could see contrails. I was curious as to how one could do that, and then I saw a View of AI aircraft as one of the options. ( Forget the exact wording, but you can find it if you look at the different views).  I clicked on an Airbus, and now I am right behind the Airbus at around 30,000 feet with a nice thick contrail and it said MT-6 Airbus 380 next to the aircraft. So the MT6 AI do have contrails and you can check it anytime by right clicking on the view and looking for one of the jet aircraft that are listed.

There is something to learn about P3D every time I fly....

So, do you think you now had contrails because you reinstalled PrecipitFX or because you enabled the red labels?

I have no idea. Just uninstall and reinstall. It takes about 2 minutes, all done from the VFX menu. What you could try first, is go on a flight, and view the AI in the method I described and see if you have any contrails first.

Yes, I'll try enable the labels first and if that doesn't work I'll try a reinstall too.

First try the AI view from right clicking on the VC while you are flying between airports at cruise altitude. If you try it parked at a busy airport, it will show all the aircraft parked at the airport, rather than the ones flying at altitude.

I think I have this issue sorted out finally. First of all, the contrails are in fact, all there, on the MT6 AI aircraft if they are at the proper altitude On a short flight with not many AI aircraft, I saw contrails in 3 CRJs, a DC8, 2 777 , and a 737.  Most of the time I saw these contrails when I viewed them in AI Traffic view in P3D as I mentioned above.  Now here is the issue, to see them when you are flying by looking out the windscreen, you have to be pretty close  to the aircraft. I have read posts where people said that somewhere between 2 and 15 KM in order to see the AI aircraft, which is probably fairly close to real life. In fact you can't even see those red labels unless you are that close. The contrails are not easily seen unless you know about where the aircraft is, and then you can spot them. Could they be thicker or last longer behind the aircraft, I suppose so, but I think they were trying to get something that is close to reality as far as the contrails go.

I did some more research on this issue this morning and found several threads discussing viewing distance of AI aircraft in P3D, and it looks like 5 miles is typical. That is pretty close. I can see AI on my Pro ATC Map, and I search for them, but until I get closer than around 5 miles, I don't see them. I would guess that the visibility of the contrails is probably about the same.
