Frame Rate Dips - A Possible Cause

According to filemon, this file 006b2an6.agn and others like it with close to the same name are being looked for but not found. Anyone know what they are?FS spends lots of time looking for these files. Also FS spends lots of time looking for the texture.cab file. I just created a folder in each place FS is looking for texture.cab and put it in each place FS is looking for it. FS then says this is a folder, seems happy and doesn't look for it anymore. Not sure if it is right but FS stops looking for it and no ill effects.Anyone use AISmooth and see what files FS is looking for and never finds. It looks for AISmooth_RW.db-journal and AISmooth_RO.db-journal. FS never finds them even if you create them.Interesting. I have no solution to this.JimCYWG

*.agn = autogen

That makes sense Scotty. I was reading in another forum, can't place where, and they were having problems with trees and other stuff on the runway. Someone mentioned to get rid of certain agn files. Sure enough getting rid of them, got rid of the problem.JimCYWG

My machines have been connected to the internet for years and I've never had a virus damage my computer in any way, and only a couple of times have tested a virus scanner. The machines the kids use all have always had virus scanning software and all use the MS firewall, and they all have gotten viruses and hijacks. The biggest culprit seems to be AIM.I don't use the MS Firewall (my routers have firewalls built in, but I imagine they aren't that secure). I'm just careful about where I go, I scan everything I download that could possibly be an issue, I scan every so often with Trend Micro and various Spyware sites, as well as Ad-aware, and I make sure I am up to date on all windows updates. And that's about it. I have supposedly downloaded a couple of files that contained viruses, but got rid of them before they did damage, and, like Jim, I am very careful about my email. In my experience, the virus scanning software gives minimal protection. Safety depends on you.Anyway.Thomas

>In my experience, the virus scanning software gives minimal>protection. Safety depends on you.Thomas:That statement is so beyond "well said" that is should be a monument for all PC users. Safety *does* depend on the user and -- as far as recent anti-virus technology is concerned -- never depends upon some software-based construct.I'll say it anyway: *extremely* well said. :)

I think you won't find a texture.cab file. Just like above for the effects.cab file, I imagine that if FS can't find a texture file, it is hardcoded to look for texture.cab. When it can find the other missing files, I imagine it will stop looking for texture.cab.That said, if the other files are there, why can't FS find them?

But these 006b2 etc files do not exist anywhere. I searched the FS9 disks. And FS keeps looking for them. Is this causing performance issues? Does removing files to remove autogen cause performance issues? Perhaps fewer performance issues than if they were there, but perhaps it's better to make dummy files or turn off the autogen altogether.Thomas
