Frame Rate Dips - A Possible Cause

Yeah, I remember subscribing to that PMDG thread since I exclusively fly PMDG a/c and was interested to see PMDG's reply. Do you know why the thread was deleted?

I don't know. Maybe they took it as an insult on their products? or maybe they think it may hurt their business with that visible in their forum? You'd have to ask them.Jason

Well...actually I'm not that surprised since they are quite well known for deleting posts that they don't see fit in their forum but if there's an actual problem that could be solved and making their products better it's sad this is the way they handle it.But what do I know, never read the thread before it was deleted myself and maybe they had a very good reason for deleting it.

Well i read that thread and all people said was what the problem seemed to be and that everyone who checked got the same result, a screenshot to make it as clear as possible, I also added in my comment on the 737 VC issue. PMDG asked if the one who started the post was using the latest version of the 747 and the answer was affirmative. That was all response from the team before the thread was gone.Well as you said, a big problem or not, when customers noticed and raised it to the attention of the developers, it's IMO probably not the best way to handle it by starting with deleting the thread.Jason

I agree with you Jason but like I already said, unfortunately I'm not that surprised...

I agree up to the point where the machine is connected to the internet. An internet machine is extremely vulnerabe.Even if you only browse trusted sites a mistyped address is enough and you end up on a site with intruding stuff. At least the firewall is needed and a complete system scan once in a while. The original poster however said his machine is not connected to the internet. I can say that I am running a computer which is for FS only. It is connected to a 2nd machine wich feeds the weather and other stuff. Of course the 2nd machine is running behind a firewall and with anti-virus protection. I have had this setup for years and never ran into a problem. From time to time I run a Spysweeper end a virus scan just in case but both have been negative from day one.Alex

I'm reading these posts over and over but cannot seem to totally grasp it. I have Filemon. I haven't used it yet. But when I do, what should I do with the error entries I most likely will encounter? Delete? If it's not there, I surely can't delete.:) Right? Move files? To where? Who is actually using this to fix small stutters and framerate problems? And how are they fixing them? In detail please. And lets try to stick to the subject. I don't want to read about some guy never using virus software because I don't think that person would be worth taking seriously anyways! If this is just a starting point of a fix that is yet to come than...cool,I understand. But I really don't know what some solutions might be at this point so far. Thanks.Kevin

I only run file mon for a couple minutes while flying - the save the output as a file to review later. I'll sometimes do this during a flight two or three times. You need to understand what the error messages are telling you.In come cases - it will look for a missing texture file. You have to find that texture file and get it in the correct folder. This could involve having to remove and reinstall a scenery. But as noted above - don't be concerned about a missing texture.cab file that's one of the default places FS looks when it cannot find a missing file.FS looks a lot of places for missing files.Gauges and panels can be a bit different because the use of .CAB files is growing and is preferred.(Does anyone besides me wonder if FSX might use texture.cab in place of a texture folder?)If you find an aircraft constantly looking for a gauge which it cannot find - you'd want to edit the panel to use a different gauge.Start slowly - identify frequently called files that are not found - work through the issues. You will build your skill and your confidence.Don't hesitate about specific files if you are not sure.

Hi Reggie. My question is: I finmd a few missing Fx files but I don't know where to obtain them? They are not on my hard drive.

Quite a few aircraft.cfg files have .FX files listed in them which are not included in the package with the aircraft - and assume that you already have these files. In those cases I either substitute an effect file I have already, or remove the entry from the aircraft.cfg.The smoke effect is an excellent example. This is an addition to enhance your aircraft outside views - but will not impact the operation if the effect is remarked out or removed from the aircraft.cfg file. For the type of flying I do, this isn't a big deal.It if is for you - redownload the aircraft and check the zip - search the libraries - send an e-mail to the aircraft developer - ask for help on the forums.Somebody always the answer, the hard part is asking the correct question.

Neat. FS was for a while looking for the liscense file for my DF-C310 in the main FS folder. It was not found as reported by file mon.So I put it there to see what would happen. Well, the C310 opened with no guages. Like you downloaded the plane file illegally. Took the liscense file out and the guages were back. Who knows.Be carefull out there men.Hey, on the show The Bachlor, there is a girl from Winnipeg, Manitoba, CANADA there. That's where I'am from. She got a rose.JimCYWG

Yes - you have to watchout for how / what FS is looking for.One way to save a lot of file space and speed up the operation of FS is to place the _L.bmp texture files in the main texture folder. For some AI aircraft on my system - that saves over 250MB of space by having only one file and not 250 files. However, when FS loads it will look in one of the aircraft texture folders and not find the file. It will find the file in the main texutre folder on the third attempt. While this looks like a possible error in the FileMon log - it really is more efficient to have only one copy of an identical file being used.(FileMon verifies that FS looks at every aircraft in your folder when it loads, and again when you go to Select Aircraft)

While this>looks like a possible error in the FileMon log - it really is>more efficient to have only one copy of an identical file>being used.Efficient in terms of disk real estate, or in terms of performance? Seems to me that finding a file on the first shot would be best in terms of performance...

I'll have to do more testing - but it looks like once FS caches the file location - rather than doing a disk read or search for the lightmap file for the next repaint - it uses the cached location. The base problem the amount of data. I generated over 50MB of data - over 3 million lines of disk activity entries in the 3 min it took FS to load.Just getting that into a readable, sortable, viewable format is a lot of work.
