Two and a half years ago, I purchased a GTX 970.  I also purchased an 4770K cpu.  If I were upgrade the 970 to a 1080 Ti, would how unevenly would these be matched.  I will be soon getting P3D v4.

They don't really need to match. You'll always be swapping a CPU bottleneck for a GPU bottleneck so get whatever you can afford. The 1080Ti is a great card and if you have the means, you should definitely get one.

P3Dv4 taxes the GPU a good bit, especially with the new dynamic lighting engine.

I just had the same decision to make and went with the 1080gtx instead as it was significantly cheaper. I'm running P3D v4 and am very happy with the decision. Not convinced the Ti would make a big difference in P3D.

I think it would be worth the expense especially now that the cost of a 1080 is decreasing. The 4770K is a great cpu. The stronger 1080 will add years of life to your rig plus if down the road VR is of interest to you it'll work fine.

I think you should download P3D v4 and try with your gtx 970

i run a 970 and it can get overwhelmed if I run high settings but my system is also weaker because of my 2500K
