FS9 rebuilds database every time I start it.

BTW Ray, been looking (via a Google search) to see if I can find out any more about this and what the difference between remote and local really is. Not found an explanation yet, but I do note that whenever people post and include an extract from their cfg files, all the entries show remote= Just a couple of examples:http://forums.surclaro.com/ftopic2616.htmlhttp://www.flightscenery.com/phpBB2/viewto...f2900d64c1146bdThe plot thickens however: I have a 'clean' install of FS9.1 on a second PC - no add-ons or anything, totally 'out of the box' - which I use for reference purposes. All the entries there (default of course) show local= .... The same entries in my setup (and I just reinstalled my whole FS9 partition, almost from scratch for once - took me days) show remote= however, so I've no idea what is going on! It's FS9 that has changed them, not me of course. Ho-hum .....M.

I think we have all entered another one of the FS twilight zones...Maybe it has to do with doing a full install or not??? Like Martin said, and the plot thickens... Ray, i am not arguing it works for you at all nor that it might indeed be correct. It might also be specific to this scenery... I wonder if the developer can confirm it...I just don't want a bunch of people running out and changing ALL of their entries if they read this post and do not know better. Traditionally, if it aint broke, don't fix it.Martin, would you be willing to run an experiment? Change your Canarias entry back to remote= If you get the scenery rebuild, try the trick of creating a copy of your scenery.cfg and renaming it to OldScenery.cfg and a NewScenery.cfg and putting them in your FS root directory. See if that fixes the issue as well while still leaving Canarias as remote=...If you don't mind of course,-PaulLiquid CooledAMD 4000 San Diego2 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2Dual 7800 GTX 24 inch widescreen dual 19 inch LCDRaid-0psolksig.jpg

Paul,I'll certainly give it a go, but it's 1.15am here now and I'm off to bed. Will do it tomorrow morning and post back! .... Oh what the #### - it'll only take a few minutes. I'd never sleep for wondering what will happen: hang on .......Er, are you ready for this? The plot has not just thickened, but solidified! Since an hour back, my Canaries entries have both local= and remote= lines !!! I certainly didn't alter anything manually. I just flew around Gran Canaria a bit in the interim. The entries are as pasted below. (Note the last one is different).I also note that they show "required=true", which none of my other scenery does, default or add-on. When I start FS9, I don't get the rewriting scenery problem either. Maybe this remote=/local= thing is a bit of a red herring!!! Be good to find out what the difference is, according to Microsoft. I have one of the FS9 developper's e-mail address - I'll ask him directly. Tomorrow....Hope I can get to sleep: I'll probably have nightmares about all this now! :-)M.-------------------------[Area.227]Title=GC COASTLINE by CanarySimLocal=Layer=226Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=G:Flight Simulator 2004CanarySimProject Canarias 2006Terrain - dataGCCC[Area.228]Title=LA PALMA 2006 by CanarySim - TERRAINLocal=Layer=227Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=G:Flight Simulator 2004CanarySimProject Canarias 2006Terrain - dataGCLA[Area.229]Title=LA PALMA 2006 by CanarySim - AIRPORTLocal=G:Flight Simulator 2004CanarySimProject Canarias 2006Airport - dataGCLALayer=228Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=[Area.230]Title=EL HIERRO 2006 by CanarySim - TERRAINLocal=Layer=229Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=G:Flight Simulator 2004CanarySimProject Canarias 2006Terrain - dataGCHI[Area.231]Title=LA GOMERA 2006 by CanarySim - TERRAINLocal=Layer=230Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=G:Flight Simulator 2004CanarySimProject Canarias 2006Terrain - dataGCGM[Area.232]Title=TENERIFE 2006 by CanarySim - TERRAINLocal=Layer=231Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=G:Flight Simulator 2004CanarySimProject Canarias 2006Terrain - dataGCXO[Area.233]Title=GRAN CANARIA 2006 by CanarySim - TERRAINLocal=Layer=232Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=G:Flight Simulator 2004CanarySimProject Canarias 2006Terrain - dataGCLP[Area.234]Title=EL BERRIEL by Francisco Urquia for CanarySimLocal=G:Flight Simulator 2004CanarySimProject Canarias 2006Terrain - dataGCLBLayer=233Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=

AAARRGHHHH Why does Microsoft do this to us. .cfg's that re-write themselves, a sim that looks for files that doesn't exist. Somewhere they are all off laughing at us right now...Thanks Martin, I am totally baffled LOL...I didn't really think changing all your entries to local= was the way to go just based on searching the forum for remote= Every person who posts an excerpt from their .cfg has remote=You are going to wake up sweating with a 737 chasing you down the runway...-PaulLiquid CooledAMD 4000 San Diego2 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2Dual 7800 GTX 24 inch widescreen dual 19 inch LCDRaid-0psolksig.jpg

I don't know if this helps but ALL of my scenery.cfg entries are Local=. I usually use the scenery libray in fs or self installers to install my scenery. All of my addon scenery is also located in the Addon Scenery folder. Hope this helps.EDIT: one more thing, some of the default entries have both Local= and Remote= tags but the directory is only listed on the Local= tag.

Hi Martin,I think the REQUIRED= entries cannot be deleted from within FS9. For example the Default Terrain and Default Scenery (from memory) have that setting so you won't be able to delete those. The easiest way to see what happens is to tick the "cache this scenery" option for one layer and compare the diferences in scenery.cfg having made a copy of course before you make the change. Maybe that will clear these murky waters? :-hmmmCheers,

Martin,I'm sure that having REQUIRED=TRUE means you won't even be able to edit those entries. That is silly! Why would the developers decide that having installed that scenery you are then prevented from editing even the scenery title??? Smacks of being power crazy.

Slept well Paul - no nightmares of 747s!!I seem to recall, Ray, probably in the pdf file, a plea from Canarias NOT to alter any of their files or settings. Since I have been tweaking my setup for years, decompiling and editing bgl files and the like, and feel that I basically know what I am doing (?! - famous last words), it is slightly annoying to have one's wrist slapped in this way. (well, not quite, but you know what I mean). On the other hand, the installation is a fairly complex one and I suppose Project Canarias want to 'cover their bases' for those who are not into tinkering (then mess something up and end up e-mailing tech support). More importantly, personally I am willing to give Project Canarias a pretty wide margin of trust, given that they have provided such fantastic scenery as freeware. I always flew quite a lot over the Canary Islands anyway, so this has come as quite a gift to me...M. :-)

Okay guys, I think I have the answers to the entries in SCENERY.CFG...1. Required=True entries cannot be edited or deleted. All the Canary Islands freeware scenery layers have this unnecessary option set.2. Local={path} is for scenery used directly. i.e. when installing manually you point to the parent folder containing the scenery folder to be used and there is an option down at the bottom for "use directly" or "cache this scenery". If you select "use directly" the Local= line is populated. If you select "cache this scenery" the remote line is populated.3. I have set one airport to "cache" and exited and restarted FS9. On restarting FS9 rebuilds its databases each time it's started.4. If I uncheck the option "Empty CD-ROM scenery cache on exit" and restart FS9 the databases are NOT rebuilt after the first reload. This is because the SCENERY.CFG is not updated until after that first reload following a scenery change. So those of you with Remote= entries who are not having the database rebuild message displayed might want to consider what changes you may make.Mystery solved for me :-hah

Hi Martin,Yes, I can understand why they would have done this. Those of us with scenery.cfg knowledge will know how to get around the self-protection option so it wasn't anything more than a slight annoyance.I've always been an investigator. Within 24 hours of getting my first PC back in '92 I had messed up my Windows 3.1 installation but sorted it out myself within a few hours. The first thing I look for on any new software is Options / Preferences to see what I can change :D I just like having control. The Canary Islands package is excellent and I try to make a point of not criticising free/donation-ware software. This thread wasn't about that of course - just sorting out the rebuild problem and hopefully my other message will now have done that.Time for a fly me thinks!! :-wave

Ray,I still have to completely disagree, I am sorry. 1. Not sure about the Required switch... Will not comment2. If you select "Use scenery directly" it does NOT automatically populate the Local= line Compare the excerpt from my scenery.cfg and the corresponding FSM entry below. In fact EVERY single entry in my FS.cfg has remote= and is set to use scenery directly. 3 & 4 are related to HOW you installed FS. Per FS help from within the SIM: " Managing Scenery File Storage"If you performed a FULL installation during setupFlight Simulator copied all of its scenery data to your hard drive. If you didn't run a FULL install, the scenery files will be copied to your hard drive from the CD as they're needed. To Free up hard disk space, you can choose to automatically remove these files when you exit Flight Simulator. And then there is a big disclaimer in Bold: NOTE: If you didn't choose a full installation during setup, and you select Empty cache on exit Flight Simulator WILL REBUILD its scenery indexes EVERY TIME you start FS. This will increase start time...Ray, no one who has remote= has to change anything... If you do a full install of default FS right now and select a full install EVERY entry will be remote= This comes down to HOW you installed FS rather than anything else.Ray, I unbderstand that this may be what you are getting on your machine but it is very dangerous to start reccomending that everyone with remote= start looking for what changes they can make. Especially considering your theory on "use scenery directly" is certainly not valid here and may not be for ALOT of others. Do a search on remote= in the forums. Everysingle person I have ever seen post an excerpt has remote=So for those of you with remote= entries, do not change anything until we can get a DEFINITIVE answer. Right now this is all pure speculation on all of our parts... Yes - I agree. It's all quite interesting on an academic level and I will try & find out dirctly from the FS9 guys what the difference is, but (as I think everyone agrees) my Canaries setup now works fine, so I am not touching the scenery file until I know 100% what I'm doing.Happy flying..M.

Hi Ray,Deary me, my brain's spinning!I wonder whether the following images from my setup help at all?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/147530.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/147531.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/147532.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/147533.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/147535.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/147536.jpgFS9 won't allow editing of, e.g. Default Scenery (Required=TRUE)Local= Describes the path to each scenery which is used directly (assuming scenery installed on local HD).My understanding is that the Remote= switch will describe the path to scenery which has not been installed to the local HD, i.e. the drive on which FS9 is installed. Using the Cache this scenery option just saves time (if you fly in the same area frequently and don't want to load the same scenery from the CD each time you fly). If the cache is emptied at the end of a simming session then the scenery will have to be reloaded next time FS9 is started and the database rebuilt. Regards,Mike

Yep, I think You Ray and Martin are right and I am wrong. After playing around, Ray is 100% correct and the scenery will show Local= with a path for scenery that is installed on the HD. Remote= is for scenery not installed. What is confusing and what got me was that each entry has both LOCAL=Path and a Remote= . I was seeing remote= on every entry and that is what got me. Shame on me. I WHOLEHEARTEDLY CONCEDE THAT RAY IS RIGHT. MY BAD I WAS WRONG RAY WAS RIGHT....I would rather be wrong and have a definitive answer than go on without one LOL...Good job Ray, I said I would apologize if I was wrong so I am really sorry. Pretty impressed with how composed you remained while I was disagreeing. You don't see that often in the forums. Really impressive.Been a pleasure,Cheers,-PaulLiquid CooledAMD 4000 San Diego2 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2Dual 7800 GTX 24 inch widescreen dual 19 inch LCDRaid-0psolksig.jpg

Yes, I've been a bit thick too! Like you Paul, I didn't notice (going blind?) that every scenery.cfg entry has a remote= and a local= option. Er, not that I am callinmg YOU thick, Paul!! Oh dear, protocol can be so difficult on these forums - so open to misinterpretation!! Thank God for the little icons -- :-)Moving swiftly on, as they say, that still doesn't account for why all the CanarySim stuff installs under remote= and leaves the local= as blank - on my installation anyway. I did install it onto the hard drive, after all! Or am I still being thick? (Very possible!!).All the best,M.
