May 8, 200620 yr Hi all-I've been looking around for improved Philadelphia-area scenery (which most likely would also go east and cover southern New Jersey) but haven't found anything.I saw Megascenery covers DC and NY but not Philadelphia, and while there's no mention of anything in the works on their site, I guess that doesn't mean they're not working on it.Anyone have any ideas?thxAndrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g
May 8, 200620 yr I to am in search of something to cover Philadelphia. There's Simflyer's PHL scenery, but it's pretty old, and it doesn't model the new international terminal. There were some people in the FlyTampa forum pushing for them to do PHL next, but I don't think they've announced anything. I did see a post referring to another scenery design group that announced PHL was next on their list, but the name excapes me at the moment.Do you live in the PHL area?Tim
May 8, 200620 yr Hi Tim - Yes, I now live in Mount Laurel and (until my daughter was born and the flight school moved and became 30% more expensive instantly) I used to fly from South Jersey Regional (KVAY).One of the things that really bugs me is traveling west from New Jersey and seeing a low level of mesh detail along the Schuylkill River, though I realize FS Genesis may cure that. Also, north along the Delaware through the New Hope area is pretty disappointing... South, just below KPHL, the interchange areas at the base and along the full length of the Blue Route is awful, and then again up around the 476/76/NE Extension interchange it's pretty bad as well..USA Roads can only get you so far!Andrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g
May 8, 200620 yr Oh yeah, I agree with everything you said. The whole area really is need of enhancement, not just the airport. I myself live in Chester County, to the west of Philly and I go to flight school in Allentown. I fly out of Lehigh Valley International (KABE) I like to fly south to my home airport of Brandywine when I fly from ABE. I try not to look at the roads around Philly as I fly FS haha.Tim
May 8, 200620 yr Hi Tim - In fact, I grew up in Allentown; my first small-plane ride was with an uncle at Queen City...Yeah, I fondly remember when ABE was a "little" airport! I haven't flown up there (except that once when I was small) but would love to. Also, I think, flying up to the water gap must be beautiful. Hmmm. Well, here's to hoping our area gets something good pretty soon!BTW - why do you go to Allentown for flight school?Andrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g
May 8, 200620 yr Yeah, my flight school's practice area is to the north of the gap at Beltzville Lake--nice up there. And I fear flying to Queen City. Many times that airport seems to be the nexis of the aviation universe...haha.Anyway, I go to Lehigh Carbon Community College. They have a two year aviation degree. I take my flight lessons out of Ace Pilot Training which is based at ABE. The degree is supposed to only take 2 years, but next fall will start my third. If I had known more about getting certificates and ratings before I enrolled at LCCC, I would have known that attaining a private, instrument, commercial, and CFI is extremely difficult to do in 2 years. I probably would have ended up going somewhere like ERAU for four years, which is probably where I'll transfer to after next year.Tim
May 8, 200620 yr I am also from the area near N67 now KLOM and have wished for a long timne for a new version of PHL. I was always so happy in FS2000 to have PHL but have seen the new sceneries come out and see how far airport sceneries have come and only wish it wouls be done by Flight Scenery or Fly Tampa 2 of the best IMO.Here's to hoping Andrew
May 8, 200620 yr Using FSGENESIS Mesh helps the Water Gap area an awful lot. My home base is a bit farther North than you guys (KAVP) but I Flight Sim from Philly to Avoca a lot. Too bad the Tunnel on the NE Extension of the Turn Pike goes right up over the mountain, it really kills the look.I'm not aware of any other enhancements for the area, Sorry.Jim
May 8, 200620 yr "Too bad the Tunnel on the NE Extension of the Turn Pike goes right up over the mountain"Ouch.West to Reading / Lancaster is also a favorite sim destination... I hadn't looked for the tunnel.On a side note, ever try to hold your breath all the way through that thing?:)Andrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g
May 8, 200620 yr It's been awhile since I've been through the tunnel, but when I was younger, my brother and I used to try it, but I don't recall either of us ever being successful :)Tim
May 8, 200620 yr Another Chester Countian here, about 10 miles south of 40N. Using FSGenesis mesh and landclass and Ultimate Terrain helps a bit, but kills me on frame rates, though flying West away from Philly suburbs helps reduce the strain a bit. As far as dedicated KPHL scenery, I haven't been able to locate any myself.Ian.
May 8, 200620 yr Hi Ian - I just looked up 40N on Airnav. That looks like a pretty interesting approach given good terrain..Andrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g
May 9, 200620 yr Great topic.I live in Allentown; fly out of KABE whenever I travel. I'd love to see a comprehensive KABE, KRDG, and KPHL and everything east. I love to fly into KAVP in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and often take a nice flight into what is considered a dangerous airport to use...KIPT (Williamsport, Pa.).This whole area is in terrible need of enhancement, and I'd be willing to pay for it.
May 9, 200620 yr Wow, this is weird. I've never seen people on hear talk about my home area. I my solo cross countries to Lancaster and my three legs from ABE-IPT-AVP-ABE. Love that mountain at IPT :)Tim
May 9, 200620 yr Hold my breath? I close my eyes, even when I'm driving!!Someone did a real nice makeover of Reading with the airport detailed really well, some new land class around the area, tons of AI, & some local VFR landmarks. The airport even includes the MAAM building. I forgot who did it and I lost it in a reformat a few months back & never reinstalled it. It is here in the libray at AVSIM though.Jim
