What is normal CPU usage for FS?

I think you are asking how do I see it while running FS. I have two monitors and have it up on the second one. You can see the changes while you fly. I just added the second GB of ram and it is getting used and I can see a difference in performance. That is always satisfying.I found in a quicktime menu where I could disable it. I will check out the other stuff mentioned. Thanks for the info.

I think 2 gigs makes a difference also. Just smoother I think. I don't have 2 gigs but my 1 gig sometimes gets all used up and the swap file gets really large.JimCYWG

Yeah I was seeing periods of over 1 gig usage when I was flying earlier. It's nice to put it to use right after I put it in.

You might also set up your swap file size to very low--like 0 to 2mb. With 2GB of memory installed, and a typical swap file size of 1.5GB or something, you will see you do in fact swap to the drive just as much as if you had 1GB of ram installed. The extra GB of ram allows you to get away with decreasing the swap file size. . . AND not running out of physical ram under very taxing conditions. At least that's what happened here :()Noel

I would take a serious look at>what is running in Windows (other than the sim).>>Rob Morrison>FS Enthsiastthis made me laugh. i think i spooked the other people in the room. oh well, i just told them. now they are all laughing. so please, explain what is wrong, and is it not good? hmmm

Is it in the BIOS?

Thanks. I had to go on a trip so I will have to change that when I get home.

FS if I minimize but leave it running is usually on around 50-75% depending on what is around me. At an airport sure the CPU usage is way higher than in cruise. If your CPU is maxed out then you would notice a lot of slowdown. At this sort of percentage your fan will be going flat out to keep cpu cool. Chances are it will be running hotter even so, and that means a shorter life expectancy.Mine's a 3Ghz P4 btw, and as I said with FS minimized it uses nowhere near 100%A heckuva lot depends on your system overall, yes FS is CPU intensive, but look at what it has to do, a world of AI that need to be tracked, clarified and classified. WX systems that it needs to generate as you fly. The more we add to it the more the list goes on. But unless you have a lower than 2.4Ghz CPU I don't think it should be hitting 100% consistently, only in the worst case traffic scenario. Incidentally that's something that does hit your cpu, traffic, the higher it's set the harder on your cpu it will be.

In my experience.....Every PC, no matter what the CPU speed or configuration, will see FS9 consistently using 100% of the available CPU cycles. As this is the way it has been with MSFS since the beginning that's not a change. Heat-sink fans are made to cool CPU's - that's why they are there and there's no need to worry about the fan speed(s) under a constant, heavy load. As long as the CPU temperature is kept within design limits there will be no shortening of it's life. And with any properly cooled case, no CPU will reach this design limit even if left to run at a 100% duty-cycle 24 hrs a day. So, IMNSHO, folks should stop worrying about how much CPU is being utilized as there is nothing any of us can do about it anyway and it sure doesn't matter to the computer.Doug
