CPU cooling for possible upgrade

Recommended Posts

I use the H100I V2 at the top of the case ....works damn good! I did have to make some modifications in the interests of noise and temps. I switched out the stock cooler fans for the Noctua NF S12A fans and applied MX4 thermal compound by Artic for the block. No noise with good cooling.

The below image was captured this morning:;ambient room temp was 74F. My room temps this time of year are around 72 to 74 in the morning with afternoon temps topping out at 77 to 78F. These temps are with cores locked at 5.0 with no AVX offset. My gpu temps never change ...always between 68 to 70 C.

note: add a degree C to the max cpu temp for the afternoon score and subtract a degree for the morning score. ....yeah, a very tight range.. 🙂

LOL at the A/C idea ...yeah, i've thought about it to. 🙂

I'm real fond of '2-fers', ie getting more than one issue solved.   Yes, ambient in the house is 79-80F, outside it's 90-100F, so I use my cooling solution (a/c, versus 'fan only') in the warmer months to cool both me and the PC, and in the wintertime I'll either use fan only or nothing at all.   I can't say for sure how things would be now had I not gone down this road, but over 5y now on this system which I run probably for 6 hours daily at full 4.42GHz I tend to believe it's helped, keeping the entire box cool:  GPU, ram, CPU, etc.   The 'noisy' is way overblown--the next time you take a real life flight in a Q400 or anything else I guarantee you the dB rating will be orders of magnitude higher than my 'lil AC cooling solution.   So really Martin, it's ADDS to the aural ambience, so truly, it's actually a 3-fer ;o)

Actually i will be in a Q400 late august Noel! Going to Sark, it's a two square mile island in the channel islands, here in the UK. No cars allowed on the island, it's all horse and cart taxis, walk or cycle. First island to get dark skies status. Chanel islands are actually closer to France than UK but UK territory, or more accurately Baliwick of Guernsey.

I'm, not simming at the moment, but when I did, still didn't like noise. 🙂

We certainly need air con here in the UK at the moment. Very sweaty trying to sleep. We only have air con in shops and offices. Its central heating usually in the UK, via a gas boiler.

I spoke to a guy a few years ago here on avsim, who was talking about relocating his PC out in the garage, and just running the cables through to his room. His idea was that his cold climate would keep his PC very cold and he could OC to the max. Don't know if he ever went ahead.

Yep, built a Mini ITX for my daughter. I'm not an AIO fan but it was the best solution for her mini case, so also installed a H100iv2. I also replaced the fans with the same Noctua fans. 🙂

It will be very interesting to see what de8auer's new cooler manages.

Now that you mention it: I didn't have anyone in mind when I purchased the Noctua fans for the cooler, but I think you mentioned your daughter's puter and the cooling solution used a while ago in these very forums. Cheers!

re: de8auer's new AIO cooler

If that cooler is half as good as his cpu clock preset I use with my mobo I'm buying it.... probably won't install it but I will support the cause.

Rumour going round that Intel are going to start soldering some of the X series CPUs instead of toothpaste, due to the rise of AMD threat.

I guess it's a kind of an AIO but relying on phase change, Novec non conductive fluid, and best of all no pump to fail or become noisy. Think the top mounted chamber will still be big though in the finished product and must be at the top, so some PC enclosures need not apply. 🙂

I tried his 5 GHz settings on my board with no success. But that was with an early BIOS. The BIOS I have now is better, 5 GHz on all cores at reasonable voltage HT on. AVX offset 2. So his settings would probably be fine now.

Yeah, I was being lazy with the description '''' AIO ''''. Sorry.

LOL

I put that channel on in the background to get the latest tech rumors when I'm too busy to sit around refreshing all the news and rumor sites, it's good for that at least.  Paul's analysis is often woefully misguided, though.

I guarantee you Intel is not about to start soldering CPUs again.  Especially not mainstream I7 SKUs.  It's as simple as this: if you can go buy a $2000 18 core I9 that is not soldered, no way would Intel bother to solder a $350 8 core part.  Simple business decision.

Looks like you may be wrong: http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/core-i9-9900k-8-core-will-have-soldered-heatspreader.html -  unless that's just for the review samples.

If that's true it may be time to upgrade.   If Ryzen is still using solder it's a bit puzzling to me w/ the massive heat output of these processors that Intel hasn't dedicated solder to their high end desktop processors.   Surely the folks who purchase high end K processors are certainly willing to pay the surcharge to get solder over silly putty, I know I would even if it were a few hundred $$. .

The article is misleading.  Here's a much better one: https://techreport.com/news/33940/rumor-core-i9-9900k-could-hit-4-7-ghz-on-all-cores-and-use-a-soldered-ihs

Summary: some guy on a Chinese forum claims he's got one and that its soldered.

If you want to believe that be my guest.

Clearly Intel hasn't needed to use solder and I've read enough now to understand it's a complex issue fraught w/ technical challenges made worse the smaller the die size.  This being said, w/ so much improvement (touted all over the web re delidding) in cooling afforded by soldering it's certainly conceivable that at some point Intel might need to revert to soldering to meet cooling needs so they can meet their claimed turbo speeds on future parts, unless there's for example too much collateral damage losses of a certain % of chips subjected to soldering.  I've always wondered why they don't offer a 2nd tier of chips for the K crowd and add a sufficient surcharge to offset the higher cost.  I'd happily pay another $150 to have a factory soldered IHS were that an option.

You sound confident in your opinion--from what do you base it on?

I read your linked article and submit a further one (no Chinese forums involved!): https://www.golem.de/news/core-i9-9900k-intels-achtkerner-ist-verloetet-1807-135685.html. It's in German but the important part translates to this:

Several sources near Intel have confirmed independently that Intel joins the metal lid to the processor with solder. However, this is apparently only the case for the two Octacores, ie the Core i9-9900K and the Core i7-9700K. For the smaller models with six cores such as the Core i5-9600K, the manufacturer seems to continue to use the classic thermal paste.

I guess only time will tell.
