Mount Erebus Disaster - what we know & learned (II)

Featured Replies

This is the 2nd set of images for the story for a flight flown un-eventfully with a Lockheed C-5 Galaxy (an occasional but actual visitor to McMurdo Station, and impressive in its own right), but this SIM aircrfat I've never flown (in my recollection), to the Ice Runway (NZIR) of U.S. McMurdo Station on Antarctica. Per AS “Antarctica X”, the "Mac Town" houses a small supermarket, a gym, a helipad, an ATM, more than one bar, a club and a church whose bells are ringing daily between 12am and 1pm in AS's “Antarctica X” scenery! A screenshot of the SIM/AS-FSC sourced Route Map is shown below - with the LHS track being the planned route over McMurdo Sound (west of Ross Island) to NZIR (via a Fix), and the RHS track being the incorrectly programmed route over Lewis Bay right across Ross Island (to Mt Erebus). In the approach phase of these images, you can clearly see the shape of Mt Erebus behind the clouds (against the sky). Of course, the C-5 is approaching NZIR Ice Rwy on the safe side of the mountain (not from the opposite side as was the case for the ill-fated DC-10-30 flight of Part I). My compliment to both parts of this story. That will give me stuff for reading and researching many days. And - of course - wonderful pictures.

Thanks, Harald/Patrick!

[Harald: Don't lose sleep over it...🙂...your own trans-oceanic adventures are demanding enough...]

Excellent post and write up. The purple looking clouds result in a really atmospheric shot 😲
