October 12, 20196 yr I was wondering: if the scenery, away from highly detailed cities, is satellite images with autogen buildings and trees placed on it, what will we see when we get close to landmarks like castles, fortresses, power plants and the like which are far off these highly accurate areas? Anyone heard or seen something on that issue? What do you think Neuschwanstein, the Taj Mahal or the Castel de Monte will look lilke in FS2020?
October 12, 20196 yr Hope there will be a system implemented, that users could create such landmarks at their own and upload them onto the "MSFS World" and all have them then automatically implemented (as far as they are online) Imagine how accurate the world could get over time: users will create there own house, the landmarks of their own city, tiny little details no company or commercial addon creator would ever cover. Maybe down to tree size and species. October 12, 20196 yr Ok but let s imagine 10 persons make the Taj Mahal, which one will be automatically implemented in the sim ?
October 12, 20196 yr The one with the most votes ... Thats indeed something that needs some kind of "selection mechanics". But however it is done, I believe, the cloud aka all users choose the best one at least. But yes, could get complicated Guenter Steiner -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Betatester for: A2A, LORBY, FSR-Pillow Tester --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can see the concerns of "Noooch". Only idea I have is, that there's a kind of "ingame workshop overlay". You fly (or want to fly) somewhere and missing a landmark. You can activate this InGame Workshop (MSFSiGWs ™) and an overlay will show you if and which additions have been created where you could choose from. Have no better idea Guenter Steiner -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Betatester for: A2A, LORBY, FSR-Pillow Tester --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
October 12, 20196 yr The problem with user submitted 3D models for buildings and landmarks is performance. Wrong LOD levels, double sided polygons, large textures, they will all possibly negatively affect performance for everybody. So the best bet you have is that scenery makers will start to produce landmark packages for cities, countries or regions (paid or freeware). If they do a bad job at keeping performance in mind people will just not buy or install the product, same like with planes and scenery packages. We can hope however that Microsoft will be creating lots and lots of landmarks (like they did for Paris and London) already. I'm sure the Taj Mahal will be featured upon release. Now for the less well known landmarks I'm sure ORBX or some other company will jump in as they probably already modeled loads of them (at least for Great Britain and the Netherlands). Power plants should be doable using their AI approach mostly. Castles and fortresses might also be doable using AI once they feed it with enough data, but if they do that it will probably be way after release. I'm curious if they will be able to do power-lines using the AI approach as I've not yet seen them in any screenshots. They should be available in other datasets though as X-Plane already has them, but I do hope they do a better job at them than Laminar did.
October 12, 20196 yr Re poll - I am sorry that was a poor joke hinting of a recent event on this forum The idea of repository like the Sketchup 3D Warehouse is certainly a great idea and I don’t mind a little competition, up to the user to decide which Taj Mahal he or she wants. A single repository would give too much leverage to MS though. October 12, 20196 yr I can see your points Raymond, you are right. But the disadvantage with commercial addon packages is always, that the developers will only model which will sell most (of course). But my little castle in the middle of nowhere wouldn't get any attention forever. Not only speaking about landmarks, but also airports or better said airstrips are also affected. We have currently the situation that we get 3 sceneries for one airport (happened not only once) but other airports do not get any attention from anyone. To find a system where it could be very easy to build things and "stream" them then into the sim would be good. But no, I still have no idea how this could work. Well I can think of a solution that will offer the best of both worlds, a single repository of landmarks and the user being able to select what he wants. What if someone creates a repository, a bit like the airport gateway from X-Plane, where anybody can upload the 3D models they created of landmarks and other models (only freeware) along with placement information. People will be able to select a series of landmarks and generate one or more scenery packages based on the selected models. That way if someone created your little castle in the middle of nowhere, you'll be able to find it and add it to your personal scenery package. Or you could just add all the highest rated models from your country to the package.
October 12, 20196 yr The sim could come with a program, a tool for creating airports (or landmarks) like in XPlane. In this "construction" program we would find a large library of walls, windows, fences, stone walls, taxiways, antennas, hangars etc.., or just hangar walls so we can build our custom objects to make each airport unique. And the best of all, all these "bricks" are made to be compatible with each other and fps friendly. Edited October 12, 20196 yr by Noooch

It will not deliver the quality of a completely custom modeled airport, but it will certainly fill in the gap between completely generic and fully modeled.

The XPlane model is good but all the gateway airports look the same, same walls, same textures, only the size and the shape of the buildings is different. What I was thinking of was the same idea but with the possibility to build the buildings yourself so it looks unique, almost like the real thing. For example I should be able to create a building with 2 brick walls, 1 stone wall and 1 glass wall, put the windows where I want etc... We should be able to build almost anything with the bricks provided by Microsoft. Edited October 12, 20196 yr by Noooch

No just kidding, I like the idea of a brick construction set for airports and other regions and I think that the sim will fare really well by having a good designer for areas (not just airports) that works really intuitive like you described. It should be visual and you should be able to use Bing aerial images as a background so you can position objects correctly. Ideally you should be able to edit things right inside of the simulator like in the early days (FS4).
