The use of ortho maps induces indeed a totally new approach. I would say costly and not as easy as some say. Implementing shading for the whole planet is a huge and complex undertaking.  Orbx gave up after a first limited try, XP never tried AFAIK. 

We are not speaking of adding snow and reddish leaves only. A trivial and small example : a golden wheat field in July doesn't look at all as the same plowed field in January even without snow.  In Northern  India I've seem notable changes before and after the monsoon. I could multiply the examples.
