X-Plane (Oculus Rift VR) - HMD visual anomaly

Featured Replies

Hi,

Having fun with VR at present using the Oculus Rift in Windows 10 Pro.

HMD display seems fine in Prepar3D, DCS World and Aerofly FS2 but not so much in X-Plane 11.40:

7Mj7vVA.jpg

Top part of image is the VR whereas the bottom 'insert/overlay' is a static image.

Nothing I do gets rid of the static image. It varies in position and size each time X-Plane starts in VR and minimizing the X-Plane window on screen does help in that it pushes the static image further down the HMD display, but is still visible and somewhat distracting when I fly. I found that displaying X-Plane as full screen on my monitor produces a visual mess in the HMD with VR active. Same with a maximized window. Is this normal?

Otherwise I think I'm in good shape having installed and configured my VR setup using:

3jFPS -wizard11
Avitab Plugin
FlyWithLUA NG
Oculus Tray Tool

Has anyone come across this issue in the HMD image and, if so, what's the remedy?

Thanks.

Mike

Not an issue I've ever encountered. Have you tried changing all settings to default and resetting fov and etc?

Hi Devon,

Yes, I've been fiddling around, but without making any real progress. FOV is now set at 60 (default).

The box with the static image offset to the right is now black:

6DSdhrK.jpg

Nothing to do with the change in FOV as it appeared this way at the start of today's session before I tried making any changes. This situation has persisted following several restarts of X-Plane 11.40. I've tried running Steam VR instead of the installed Oculus software before starting XP, but the result remains the same.

It appears to be restricted to the Oculus left view (as seen when I close my right eye) whereas the right view is OK.

I do not see this while in the hanger - perhaps that could offer a clue?

As mentioned previously, I haven't see this in any other VR App I've tried to date: P3D, DCS, AFFS2, Lone Echo, AirCar and several freebee Oculus VR demos. So, it must have something to do with X-Plane 11.40.

Otherwise flying VR in X-Plane seems fine including full hand controller function - all menu items are accessible and active and I can move around outside the a/c to my heart's content.

Regards,

Mike

Usually when something odd like this happens, it turns out that something in X-plane running in the background is the cause. I might disable a few things, and see what happens.

Okay, disabled everything with the exception of BLU-fx which insisted on re-enabling itself.

Still no joy, I'm afraid. Same as before except the static image in the left HMD view has an image once again.

Curiouser and curiouser! ☹️

Hi,

Have you tried deleting the preference folder? Keeping any files/folders for controls, keys joystick and calibration first.

If that doesn't work I would delete any suspect files you may have and run the x-plane updater.

For info I am on 11.40 with the original rift without problems.

Thanks for your suggestions, I’ll get back to you as soon as time permits. RW obligations taking precedence at the moment. Maybe a couple of days.

Missed from my original post.

delete the shadercache as well.

Mick

Try disabling fraps and 3jFPS I recall having a problem with fraps in the dim and distant past, although I run 3jFPS myself without problems.

It would be a good idea to disable all addons to test.

Hi Mick,

I haven’t used Fraps for a while now. The frames counter is courtesy of GeForce Experience.

Regarding Addons, see previous post. They were all disabled with the exception of BLU-fx which insisted on the-enabling itself. I’ll try removing it from the Plugins folder. Would be sorry to lose it as it made all the difference to the environment lighting in X-Plane 11.

Honestly, I’m beginning to wonder whether I shouldn’t try a fresh install of X-Plane. Any tips as to the best way to accomplish that? Is a repair possible? I should explain that X-Plane is not my primary sim. I use it solely to explore ORBX’s TE GB North (I live in Scotland). VR would add to that already impressive experience....assuming, that is, I can get it to work properly! There must be a simple explanation. Why is it that my Oculus Rift VR works perfectly in every other sim/game I’ve tried to date, but not in X-Plane? By now, I would be assuming that VR is broken in 11.40 except others are saying that this is not the case.

Edit: I have not used the Librain library.

Regards,

Mike

I am by no means an expert on xp11 only having migrated from p3d a few months ago and it is a new learning experience for sure.

However it is worth it when you have it running properly, and for me vr works well.

To test I would remove everything you have added to the plugins folder, then run the xplane updater which can be found in the xplane folder it will check all the files and replace any that are defective. One of the good thing with xp there is no need to uninstall and reinstall.

Hope this helps.

Mick

I have ORBX’s TE GB North (my wife is from Kirkcaldy) great area to fly.

SOLVED!!

XNzaNvL.jpg

The culprit turned out to be BLU-fx

I was able to turn the visual anomaly off and on by disabling and enabling the BLU_fx plugin in real time.

I did as you suggested, Mick: removed all my Plugins, including deletion of the shadercache, and then ran the X-Plane updater. It only added/replaced one file (1MB)  and on completion told me I was running 11.40_r2. At this point I wasn't feeling too optimistic, but running VR revealed the anomaly had gone! Hooray!

So, I started to reintroduce my plugins. Remembering that BLU-fx had re-enabled itself when testing before I started with that one and, hey presto, the anomaly was back!

Now, I might need an alternative for BLU_fx. I'll try flying around for a bit and see how things look. Maybe it's not needed anymore as I seem to recall reading somewhere that LR have been tweaking the lighting in response to user feedback. Is this correct?

Many thanks for your helpful guidance, Mick. It's greatly appreciated.

My in-laws used to live in Leven many years ago so my wife and I travelled back and forth through Kirkcaldy on numerous occasions.

Best regards,

Mike

So in the end, it did turn out to be a plugin......

Can't even remember how many times that turns out to be the case.
