2GB of memory for FSX

Featured Replies

perusing posts for the past few days--it would seem folks with 2 gig of memory are generally reporting distinctly better experience than the 1 gig crowd. that second gig wasn't doing much for fs9, is it now for fsx? task manager peaks at around 1.2 GB during an fsx session, while it stayed well under 1 GB in fs9... i thought they both page it all out regardless of how much physical memory you have... hmmm...

I put a post about that that for some reason was moved to the hardware section-although I think it has serious interest on this forum.I just upgraded from 1 to 3 gigs-and while fps show the same-smoothness, lack of stuttering, instant views when switching viewpoints-everything greatly improved. Highly recommend this upgrade. With it I am completely satisfied on my almost 3 year old machine and see no reason to upgrade further.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg

Hi,I don

My guy at FS-GS.com did indeed confirm to me that 2 Gigs will be the optimal amount of RAM for FSX.I too was surprised to here this after FS9's 1 Gig ceiling. But definitely plan on getting up to 2 Gig for X.

Do not stop at 2GB if you can afford it.MS says 2-4 GB of RAM if you want the simulator to sing (sing is a MS term) along with other additional high-end hardware.

I was under the impression that you could only change the latecny with AGP and not PCIe. What kind of card are you using. AGP or PCIe? As far as ram goes I just installed 1G for a total of 2G. With 1G my PF was hitting approx. 1.1G. With 2G I am hitting in the 700's. Everyone should also make sure their page file settings are correct. Thanks, Craig

>>Do not stop at 2GB if you can afford it.>>MS says 2-4 GB of RAM if you want the simulator to sing (sing>is a MS term) along with other additional high-end hardware.True more may be better with FSX, but from a cost effective approach 2 gigs is gonna be the way to go. If you have the money and want that extra 2-4%%, certainly can't hurt to go 3-4 gigs.

If you're using WinXP 32-bit no need to go more than 3GB as that's all the 32-bit OS can see (actually, it's closer to 2.7GB). WinXP 64-bit can see the whole 4GB as can Vista.DougEdited 'cause I can't spel

I upgraded from 1gig to 2 gig this afternoon. My original configuration was two 500meg sticks and two empty slots. Going farther than 2 gig for me would be very expensive. I notice an immediate improvement in loading the simulator and ending the simulator. It used to take 30 to 40 secs for FSX to disappear from the desktop tray after an exit. Now it is a few seconds. There is no change in FPS (as expected) but view changes snap quickly. I still get a few hesitations (I think) but much less than with 1 gig. I am also please with the improvement, plus the non FS increase in load times for all programs.Bob...

When I said "If you can afford 2-4 GB of RAM", that is what Microsoft says and not my opinion.I am not expressing an opinion but stating a fact that is in print. Two GB of RAM is the low side of optimal if MS says 2-4 GB. Now if mid 2GB is all a computer uses then why say 2-4 GB.MS also recommends certain manufacture SLI Video Cards and minimum processor speeds if you want the simulator to sing. Once again sing is a term MS used when refering to Frames which they also say should not be set higher then 30 FPS. The problem I see is people want to max out the sliders and then when their computer can't run FSX they want to blame MS.If you max out all the sliders and add a lot of Traffic MS says you will bring the computer to its knees. Once again that is a qoute from MS and not my opinion.

Thanks for the tip Staffan. I will try that out. Incidentally, I find FSX using as much as 1.8 gb of memory at times.Glad I got 2 gb back when I built mine.RhettAMD 3700+, eVGA 7800GT 256, ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, etc. etc.
