I'm looking at again replacing the PC, having been told by PC Specialist that what I currently have shouldn't have a GPU upgrade of more that a 1650 as the rest of the system will become the bottleneck 😞

The main use is going to be for P3D5, using a single screen at 2560x1440 (might replace later though), so it seems a GPU of no less than 8GB would be sensible and presumably more is better, hence the topic title.

I'll probably get a 9900K and overclock myself (gulp).  Am I right in thinking there are MOBO's that make this close to word not allowed proof?  Like click here and it adjusts everything needed.  If so, PC Specialist in the UK offer a choice and I'm wondering if the ASUS ROG Strix Z390F Gaming is the one to have?

So, back the GPU.  Given the 2080ti is going to cost extra, what am I missing out on by going for the 1080ti?  Would a 2080 super be almost as good, and a lot cheaper?

And yes, I know there's new hardware on the way over the next few months, but isn't there always?  Will a 2080ti really be £500 cheaper when the 3080ti appears?  It seems to me that if anything, prices will stay similar and the 3080 will be yet another £500 🙂

It's fair to say that I'm scratching my head and feeling somewhat indecisive 🙂

Cheers

In P3D basically nothing. Even in games, the 3 year old 1080Ti now for about $400 runs everything perfectly unless you want the hyped ray-tracing stuff.

I’m also using MSI 1080Ti Gaming X with 11GB RAM, and my P3Dv5 runs excellent on almost max settings, and 4K resolution using 4xMSAA. Not to mention, that I still run my old i7 4770 @4,5GHz. Based on my new experience with smoothness and fps mostly above 30 in dense addon scenery areas I’ve decided to postpone PC upgrade till next year.

My portable sim machine runs a 9900K at 5.0 GHz with a 1080Ti into a 24" 2560x1440 G-Sync monitor.  The 1080Ti works well there.  My main sim machine is a 8086K at 5.3 GHz with a 2080Ti into a 55" 4K display.  Prior to the 2080Ti, I had a pair of 1080Ti GPUs in SLI.  The 2080Ti made a difference at 4K over a single 1080Ti, and is slightly faster than the SLI combo with much less hassle.

So if you think you may want to go to 4K, the 2080Ti would preserve that option.  Otherwise the 1080Ti should be fine.  Of course one big caveat is that my experience is based on P3Dv4.  So far, from reading the mail, the big difference between v4 and v5 w/r/t the GPU is that v5 uses a LOT more VRAM.  Both the 1080Ti and 2080Ti pack 11GB...to get more than that requires an exotic and expensive GPU.

As far as overclocking, it's really not that difficult to do with a good mobo and a 9900K.  The auto-overclocks tend to push the voltages way higher than they need to be.  It just takes a little time and patience...and, of course, a CPU cooler that is up to the task.

If you ahve to have it soon get the 1080ti.  I use an 11gb one at 4k and it does a good job.  Yes there are times when I max it out.  However the difference between the 1080ti and 2080ti for flight sim is minor.  But the cost difference is not minor.  So my advice.

Now: 1080ti

Later: Wait for the 3080ti  (Expected to launch later this year)

Thanks for the suggestions.  Seems like my suspicions were right, but sadly, the 1080ti is no longer showing as available on anything built by PC Specialist.  It was there yesterday 😞

If I want 11GB, it's a 2080ti for around £1,100, so I looked at PC Partpicker to see what a 1080ti would cost if I added it myself after getting the rest of the PC built and the only one that costs less than the 2080ti is Zotac Mini (whatever that is).

So, do I settle for 8GB and save £400 by getting the 2080Super?  If I do that, why not save more and go for the 2060 or 70 as their both 8GB too?

Or maybe just wait some more!

I'd just wait for the 3080 series to come out and roll with what you have until then, the impression I get is the 2080 was just a bit of a rushed stop gap and the 3080 should provide noticeable improvement with a release potentially this year.

I have the 1080TI with 11gb memory.  That is what you need is VRAM.  Unless it breaks no reason to move.

I got mine used...wow it's a nice difference of image quality and smoothness/loading over my GTX 980.

@Paul Golding I'd go for a used 1080 ti if you can snag one!

What's a new 2080 Ti like 4x the price of a used 1080 ti?  Or just wait for the new 3080 coming

Thanks Ryan, imagine what I'll feel like finally getting rid of my i5-3570k and GTX660 😵

The really funny thing is that it will load P3d5 and is smooth with amazing frame rates...….but then everything is to the left, the very far left 🤣

I have to laugh at some of these posts that say a 2080ti will show very little improvement over a 1080ti.  I would guess most of them haven’t tried a 2080ti.  I went from a single 1080ti to a 1080ti SLI to a 2080ti.  The 2080ti blows the 1080ti out of the water and outperforms 1080ti SLI as well.  If you want to take full advantage of dynamic lighting, AA, shadows, and clouds the 2080ti is the way to go.  With my settings my 2080ti would be around 60% usage.  With the same settings and scenario my 1080ti would be pegged at 100%.

Here's what Tom's Hardware says about these GPUs:

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

This is pairing each card with an i9-9900k, so if your CPU is slower, one  might not see the full benefits. Roughly speaking a 2080ti is 13% faster than a 2080 super and 30% faster than a 1080ti. But the 11 GB of VRAM on the two ti models may be worth it if one is  running 4k @ high IQ settings.

I truly learn something everyday.  I guess I was incorrect with my thought that the 1080ti was a faster card than the non ti 2080.

mpw8679:  For sure I've found my 1080ti maxed at times.  While I almost got the 2080ti a few times, I'll be glad when all is said and done and I have a 3080ti in my rig.  I suspect the 1080ti to 3080ti will be very nice.

Wanted to add one thing for the OP.  May 14 it is widely believed that Nvidia announces the details on their new cards.  So you may want to wait.

I was going to post the same.   Key consideration from moving from 1080TI to 2080TI would be your Monitor and if you plan on doing 4K.  If not stay with the 1080TI.  Also wait and see what Nvidia will introduce in the near future.
