April 13, 20215 yr What are the switches on the actual handle for, I gather the central button is for disconnecting the tiller from the nose wheel. I presume it can also be used for none Airbus aircraft, and suitable for any aircraft that uses a steering tiller. April 13, 20215 yr The button is the pedal disconnect, normally the rudder pedals also move the nose wheel steering by a reduced amount compared to the tiller. When doing your flight control check before taxi you would press this button in to disconnect the nose wheel steering while you checked the full and free movement of the rudder pedals. Otherwise the nose wheel would turn while the aircraft is stationary which scrubs the tyres. The 787 also has this feature, but in the older Boeings like in the 747 we used to have to hold the tiller firm to stop it , and the nose wheel from moving during rudder checks. For anyone interested check out the avsim front page for a discussion on the cat3design tiller and a 10% discount code. 787 captain.
