Star Wars: Squadrons - Official Reveal!

Following a leak on the Xbox website Friday, it seemed that EA was preparing to reveal its next Star Wars game. The publisher didn’t wait too long after that to officially announce Star Wars: Squadrons.

According to a report by VentureBeat, it'll focus on dogfighting in classic Star Wars ships. While there will be a single-player campaign, Squadrons is said to center around multiplayer. It seems EA will release the game in the fall on PC and consoles.

EA's announcement backs up some of that, given the title, the “Pilots Wanted” phrasing in the tweet and a flight-themed image -- which includes Rebel and Imperial pilots along with a whole lot of starfighters. There have been several flight-focused Star Wars games in the past, namely in the X-Wing, Rogue Squadron and Starfighter series. In any case, we’ll find out more about what EA has in store on Monday, when it releases the first trailer at 11 AM ET.

The publisher’s last Star Wars title, the Respawn-developed Jedi: Fallen Order, was a runaway success, so Squadrons has some big boots to fill. EA Motive, which worked on Star Wars: Battlefront II, is said to be developing the new game.

Looks good, I used to love the old X-Wing and Tie Fighter series back in the 90s, they haven't revisited that concept since then

XWA is a great game and the upgrade is a must have. I remember having to upgrade to meet the original min spec. The difference between lucasarts Star Wars games and the rubbish ea push out is the story. Star Wars games always had excellent characters and writing. EA writing is no comparison and they focus more on multiplayer than a solid, long single player campaign. I hope the campaign is more than a token effort. PVP is not the be all and end all.

I wonder how long and complex the single player campaigns are? I would have liked an entirely Rebel/New Republic single player campaign, as I get the feeling that being able to fly for the Empire will significantly reduce the number of available missions for one particular side.

I have zero interest in multiplayer, so that dilutes the experience even further....

It’s only a $40 game. I anticipate the single player campaign to be very short.

The price is no excuse for a short story as plenty of games have massive single player stories. It is expensive to do that but the best games studios do it because they know they will easily recover their money. It is par for EA though to maximise their profit by substituting a big chunk of story for some multiplayer and monetising those loot boxes.

Shame they don't invest in some depth really because the star wars license will sell bucket loads.

Unfortunately, easy access to high bandwidth internet has made it all too easy for game developers to simply throw everything they have online. That way, they don't have to worry about creating a decent story or a huge variety of different missions. Frankly, there are times when I wish that I was back in the 1990s
