Great comparison shots between FSX-FS2004...

A simmer over at another forum has posted some great comparison shots between FS9 default and FSX default (with some included tweaks floating around). This is the best example I have seen to date of the potential of FSX and what can be ran on TODAY's rig (not a year from now). Then when the hardware catches up we can remove the tweaks. Gee... this sounds like just what we did when FS2004 came out. Thought it was worth sharing for all those wondering if they should take the plunge:http://www.fs2004.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=92413&st=0ClutchProject 9 Dragons

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

Yes, those are absolutely great shots. They really show the difference between the sims and FSX scores high points imho. Which is - I have to add - excluding the airport ground textures...You have to go to page 3 to see the comparison shots actually, but the screenies on the first page are awesome too.Just don't click on the link with a 56k dial-up ;)GreetzAlex

It's quite amazing to see what difference texture resolution does to perception of height. The FSX shots "look their altitude", the FS9 shots don't.

Actually those comparison shots dont do FS9 justice at all. He has no weather, no haze, and he has taken the shots with a different time of day also. Looks to me he was very biased towards FSX there. With a few simple and free tweaks to about three textures mine looks way better.Hornit

Maybe they're biased, maybe not - and I know you weren't commenting on my reaction to the shots, which was focused on just one particular thing - but you'll have to admit that there's nothing he could do to get higher resolution textures into FS9. Which means there's nothing he can do about the perception of height a higher texture resolution brings onto the table.

I had look. :-eek :-eekAll AI traffic disabled though. I really like the new car traffic. Amazing looking shots though, no doubt about that. Thanks for posting the link Clutch.Cheers,Jim

i dont see the fs9 shots..anyway, he has a real nice system, of course he's gonna get playable FPS in the major cities....He's got a X1900XT and not sure what CPU, sure better than mine.Shots look nice but most of us won't see that until later :(

The compare shots are on page three, Original poster has a top of the line system, some Core 2 Duo I believe. Also remember he is flying the default Cessna. There is no haze in the FS9 shots, it makes a big difference IMHO.Visibility set to 20 is far more realistic in FS9 than most folks think. I do like the better vis control in FSX. I also recommend John Cillis soft horizon fix, makes your skies look just about identical to FSX in FS9. I never said that FSX is crappy, just that folks showing comparisons should not be so biased against one or the other. If your going to show a comparison, it needs to be a comparison, not some random shot generated at the same locale.Hornit

Also, he's only showing a bit of autogen at a time, I can get 20FPS along the coast like him, but you look across the city and you get ownedOh, he must have turned off all traffic too, I did as well.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/159646.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/159647.jpg

Vis is unlimited in the FS9 shots and of course the sense of depth and altitude is lost just as it is in FSX if unlimited viz is set. I've always disliked screenshots with unlimited visibility. If you want to make FS look like a kiddies gamethat's the way to do it.

I must admit that FSX certainly looks pretty. However, there is one thing that I prefer in FS9 in most of the comparison shots and that is the water color. The blue color in FSX is unrealistic IMHO.Taking into account how good FS9 looks on my system (with all its addons like GE Pro) and how well it runs, I am not ready to make the transition yet.Cheers,Henri

>However, there>is one thing that I prefer in FS9 in most of the comparison>shots and that is the water color. The blue color in FSX is>unrealistic IMHO.and you are right about it, water around Seattle doesn't look like this, FS9 was better in this regard. However water in the tropics (say around Princess Juliana airport) does look better now in FSX, specially with all its animation and reflectivity (set at low-2). One much better thing in FSX is that they managed to solve (partially) the 'tiled' water problem - the boundaries are no longer that sharp. Michael J.

>It's quite amazing to see what difference texture resolution does to >perception of height. The FSX shots "look their altitude", the FS9 >shots don't.I have been saying the same thing since I tried the demo, 1000feet feels like a 1000feet in FSX, 1M resolution blows fs9 away ( as it should be), no addon for fs9 can give this feeling of height and speed, that FSX can provide world wide. Don't get me wrong there are problems with FSX ,barren desert textures, airports that stand out like very sore thumbs, hopefully these areas can be fixed. At the end of the day,we have a HD simulator now::),the deserts can be made to bloom but the the areas that the community can't change have been taken care off.John

Thanks, Michael.Yes, I saw that the waters in tropical areas look better in FSX. That's what I like for diving, but in a flight simulator I prefer flying in areas I know from reality. In those areas the water is definitely not as blue.BTW, long time since Fly! Best regards,Henri

Oh, sometimes it is....http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/1227/img0993jt3.jpgThis is in the Area of EDDW (Bremen, Germany),and it shows the little river "Hamme".It was a clear blue sky at a sunny spring day noon.(I was walking with my Dog, and take some pictures with my digicam.)
