October 27, 200619 yr Gary ... I have to disagree on the landclass. FSX may not be any better than FS9 (defaults), but landclass updates by Justin and others have made huge improvements. In FS9, so many places were looking pretty good compared to FSX default.See comparisons of an area in northeast FL at same location 1-FS9 2-FSX. (Yes, I also had enhanced textures, but they follow the landclass in any case). And I admit, I don't know about all other areas such as WY, but many areas ARE improved.I do agree that I'll pay a premium for good landclass. It's probably the most important addon for me.
October 27, 200619 yr It really depends on where you fly-for some reason my little area of Michigan the default fs landclass does a better job than the fsgenesis-in other areas of the country the fsgenesis does a much better job. I use the fsgenesis because I think overall it is an improvement-but it sure would be nice for the landclass whoever makes it to get even better.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
October 27, 200619 yr I also agree (and did mention above) that in the areas where Justin implemented changes, the results were well received. What I tried to get across is that only some areas have received changes thus far!And I do also consider it an outrage (even though I'm more satisfied now with the default FSX landclass for some areas I fly) that due to the default FSX landclass, some folks are having to fly a "desert" that should not be depicted that way for incredibly huge areas of many parts of the world. If I was them, I'd be clamoring even more than I am here for my above referenced little niche of the globe. :-8 I was basically trying to make it clear (as was Holger I believe) that available landclass does not yet reflect the additional local data which one could eventually incorporate into one's landclass database for FS. ;-) I am genuinely glad some folks are getting results that they are happy with using Justin's file. But as for some of my own favorite flying areas, Wisconsin for example, I am disappointed that some of the most accessible and abundantly detailed landuse/land cover data available free online has not yet been incorporated into a 3rd party landclass product to the extent that I believe it could. If it were, I'd be a happy camper... literally.( Many Illinois residents regard Wisconsin as their "largest state park"... a regional joke usually irksome to Wisconsin residents... until they think about the nice income they make off the patronage of us "foreigners"! ):-outta Hmmm... Virtual camping, where one flys into a favorite scenic area of their favorite "state park"; I wonder if the Wisconsin folks would try enforcing a "Virtual State Park Sticker" at non-resident fees on a "per-device" basis for their landuse/land cover data if they knew that use was being made of it on some peoples computers in FS? :-lol GaryGB
October 27, 200619 yr Gary - good response, and I agree.I'm just also glad there is so much talk about the landclass, and perhaps MS or 3rd party will make it more of a priority to improve on.Perhaps a very good utility so that everyone who wants to, can modify their area or various areas as desired.
October 28, 200619 yr I hoping that Justin will put a little more effort into upgrading his landclass addon for FSX; I think it provides a better overall look to the terrain than the default, but the potential is there for improvement in many areas. For now I personally will use a combination of FSG and individually done areas. For me the landclass is the most important part of the scenery; get that right and then add the trees and special autogen on top of that and the visual experience is just tremendous. I'm definitely looking forward to improved landclass files from both Justin and individuals who improve their "home" areas and other areas they are familiar with. And the best part: the landclass files are so small and provide no frame rate hit whatsoever! :) Ken
