Old Nvidia driver (446.14) works better for MSFS2020

Featured Replies

A user at the Microsoft forum, @INoooch, said he got fewer stutters using an older Nvidia driver than from newer versions, including Nvidia's game-day-release update specifically for MSFS2020. I followed his suggestion and found his advice to be very useful (at least on my own machine). It's definitely worth a try if you have an Nvidia card and you're suffering issues with performance or stutters from newer drivers.

To get version 446.14, you'll probably have to go directly to Nvidia's website. Rolling back your graphics driver from Windows Device Manager often doesn't work. When you get to Nvidia's website, follow their easy-to-use search feature to locate drivers for your card. The search results will contain ALL past drivers, not just the most recent updates. Select and download 446.14 from a few months ago and see if it makes a difference for you.

I actually noticed this stuttering problem on other games as well with this latest driver, so I am not sure it is just an MS2020 thing only. I went back to the driver I was previously using and everything is fine again.

Yes, just install the older one with the clean install option.

Nope, go to control panel, and uninstall the lastest nvidia graphics driver. Then you can install the older version.

Way, way better to do a clean install from Nvidia's site.

Forever indebted to the late Michael Greenblatt of FSGS.

Strange, I'm not having any issues with the game ready drivers.  I think I'll just leave it as is for  now.

It hasn't been necessary for a long time to ever uninstall an Nvidia driver when installing a new one. This applies regardless of whether it is a newer or older driver. The important thing is to simply check the clean install option when running the installer. No need for any control panel actions - just run the latest install executable.

Does 446.16 support the new features like GPU Scheduling or Vulcan?

The later drivers do.

Specs: Win10, 4790K, nVidia 1080ti, Saitek Yoke+Quadrant+Radio/Switch and AP panels, VRInsight 737 overhead, Virtual Avionics 737 MCP. 3 x 1440*900 main display + 1024*600 VDU display. NLR V3 Motion seat. Oculus DK2 CV1 HTC Vive VR headsets.

This is going to be dependent on the GPU in use, I think.  The 452.06 driver that is advertised as MSFS-ready works very well on my 2080Ti, but I have seen a number of posts that suggest the 10-series GPUs may not be seeing the same good results.  So if you post your findings here, please mention the GPU you are using.
