Rogue River Roundabout

Rogue River Roundabout

This week we visit the Rogue River valley in southern Oregon for a low'n'slow tour of the many small private airstrips in the area.  We will start and finish at KMFR Rogue Valley International-Medford (the last international flight left in 2003!).  The route goes as follows:

0OR5 East Oregon Cattle Co.: an easy warm-up, land either way.

4OR0 Springbrook: sloped, land uphill on 29.

OR73 Calvert Peak: hint: it's on top.  Land either way, ignore the yellow crosses. Depart by diving down the valley to the southwest to the Rogue River.

OR74 Winkle Bar: land to the west, approach low over the river in landing configuration.  Depart and follow the Rogue to OR92.

OR92 Billiebob: Hard to spot, look for the gliders. Very short and sloped, land 25.

5OR0 Backachers Ranch: land either way.

84OR B Bar Ranch: sloped, land uphill 17.

38OR Holdana Field: land either way.

OG13 Fly By Night: sloped, land 35.

(nice paint Ron 👍)

Flightplans

Can be downloaded here in PLN and GFP formats.

Aircraft

The route is not long at 136nm and is intended for low'n'slow STOL-capable bush planes.  Landings are on short and often sloped strips with little room for manoeuvre (leave the An-2 at home). Cubs and variants, Scouts, Zeniths, C185s, PC-6s would all be good choices, but as always fly what you like.

Scenery

Although the flight is entirely in the state of Oregon, scenery-wise it is covered in Orbx Northern California with the exception of Calvert Peak which is in Orbx PNW.  I suggest turning your autogen vegetation setting as high as your system will allow as there are going to be trees.  A lot of trees.

Ron -
Watch out man! There's a new painter ready to steal your glory....
There's not much, if anything, available as a proxy for the Zenith except this old FS9 model. It came with only one paint. ((
Looked at the textures.. They only used 3 colors, 8 bit, with no anti-aliasing! 😲
30 minutes later, after getting some reference colors to use, 3 "custom" paints are done! ( select color --> paste!  haha)
Looks so much better than the blue/yellow livery it came with. Now I can see who's who...

Just waiting for new Zenith entries on the spreadsheet :)  - bring it on! No entry? You get the blue 'n yellow 😉
For some reason I like Nick's paint the best -- I wonder...

There's three of us in Zeniths. Don't know about Gunter's. I never found a German one

Wouldn't you know? Two come along at once. D-MSXS and D-MGAS! They are twins. Not found out much more about them yet. I think I'll do them.

Stick and Rudder!

This is going to be fun, Nick. A few of these airstrips seem almost..."Rogerian".

Here is the Zenith in the real world livery N514JG painted by Ron Attwood.

I'm happy with my green and yellow alias...especially on Saturdays (but not at the moment)... 🦆

I assume you prefer your green and yellow on Sundays....

I have flown the whole route, they are all possible!  Winkle Bar probably has the highest chance of casualties, but it's OK, the river will quickly wash away the evidence.  Billiebob may present a challenge finding it, but that's only the first part of your problems.....

I flew part if the route in 'The Other Sim' in real weather, which was foul. I struggled to find the third stop which is on the top of a ridge. "Ahah! Found you" as it appeared through the gloom. Only to run out of juice ans plummet into the hillside. *sigh*

EDIT: Calvert Peak. R.I.P.

Am I going to be able to keep up with team Zenith in the A2A Piper Cub or do I need to rent the Maule instead?

Ted, you'll be fine in the Cub.  Team Zenith doesn't get anywhere fast....

Is the Zenith still a freebie?

I'll go look..

Thanks guys.  I'd better get the Zenith otherwise if I win any landing challenges you'll be saying it is my A2A plane. With the Zenith I have the excuse that I'm not familiar with the plane.
