CPU update or not after new GPU

Hi

I have 3 simple 1080p monitor which I guess is 60Hz ?

So you think I should download msi afterburner ? even If I don't have any msi hardware ?

You would have to open NV Control Panel, resolution tab, and see what refresh rate your screens will do.  If no 30Hz then choose 60Hz.

Yes MSI Afterburner and RTSS hopefully work with your CPU I'm not sure if you have AMD how that works.  It's a little tricky to set up  but it's free and gives you a nice on screen display of CPU loads by core, temps, GPU load/VRAM in use etc.

Also be very aware that this is new hardware release season and is absolutely the worst time to buy high end parts right now. I strongly recommend doing the research now (Which also gives Asobo time to do their optimizations) then buying with higher availability early next year.

The only thing that is a good price at the moment is ram, You can get 32GB for what 8GB was costing in the mining boom.

However if your going for a new CPU/motherboard eventually you would need to make sure any ram you get right now will be compatible with he new setup.

The CPU has been the main driving force in Flight sim performance.

So here i am again 🙂

Finally made my choice in case i m not happy with the performance update incoming

I think i'll go with either the ryzen 5 5600x or 7 5800x with a B550 motherboard

The quesiton now is about the RAM, actually I have 32gb ddr4 2666Mhz (which are almost brand new), will it work with the new config ?

And does ram with more speed will make a big difference ?

Thanks 🙂

Nope, ram with more speed does not make a big difference except in benchmark software that looks at ram speed.  Does DDR4/2666Mhz work w/ B550?  What you will very likely need is more VRAM--the sim is supposed to be ported to DX-12 and in general DX-12 demands more VRAM than DX-11 we're told.  But your RTX3070 will work well in many areas except in dense volumetric clouds you will hit the VRAM limit unless you've turned down volumetric cloud density and a few other sliders in busy areas.

RAM speeds do matter quite a lot in AMD builds. I would rather choose the R5 5600X and spend the $150 difference on new RAM. 3600 Mhz CL16 is the price / performance sweet spot for AMD 5000 series, although it can handle faster RAM.

Also make sure to set your XMP profile in BIOS to 1:1 FCLK, meaning a 3600 Mhz kit would run at 1800 Mhz (double data rate).
You should be able to sell your current ram on the used market.

Here's an article that speaks in detail to this:  https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2020-08-22-does-ram-speed-affect-fps-on-amd-ryzen-memory-frequency-vs-timings

Most effect comes in multithreaded games and from reading this article I would guess if you went full on 4000Mhz you might pick up 12-15% over 2600Mhz RAM, which is certainly substantial.  Cost is reasonable so might as well go for 4000Mhz.

yeah that's what i heard that AMD need fast ram,

Is there any difference between CL16 and CL18 ? seem much easyer to find those in CL18

If you will be overclocking there's always that issue--ram tolerance for overclocking, as far as high freq ram is concerned.  CL16/CL18 will have a very small difference ultimately.  In the end so many other variables make so much more of a difference.  If you load up the 787 as a surrogate for a so-called 'study-level' plane like PMDG puts out, you will likely find the main thread is hammered quite hard, at least it is for me w/ my settings.  If you find your CPU can't maintain a minimum of 30fps in the 787 over dense scenery then a few % more thruput isn't going to make or break the experience whatsoever.  I think your VRAM will limit your experience magnitudes more than faster RAM will.

Thanks for your help, before switching ram I'll change my CPU and MB and see if I am happy with it 🙂

Need to check tomorrow with triple monitor, but I did a try on single monitor after update and It seems I have a massive performance improvement, 16FPS at KLAX this morning and 25 after update,

need more test tomorrow

Wow great, we hope...that they didn't rob Peter to pay Paul so much that we notice!
