P3Dv4.5.3 and v5.1.1 on separate SSD's?

Featured Replies

As the title suggests, this is the way I've installed my versions of P3D.  My question is specific to GSX.  The original install went to the v4 SSD, then I added v5 to a newly formatted and separate SSD.  I did an uninstall of GSX and reinstalled for both v4 and v5.  GSX shows on v4 but doesn't appear on v5 (SODE does show in v5 add-ons).  Suggestions on how to make that work?  BTW, I'd ask on the FSDT forums but I've already peeved Virtuali about a "No Jetways Here" question and I don't want to aggravate him further.

Haha... yeah he can be testy.  Use of separate SSD is irrelevant unless you install scenery into the P3D folders.  FSDT has been using the add-on.xml method correctly since v4.0 was released.

The GSX installer creates a folder for FsDreamTeam Addon Manger and FsDreamTeam Exclude in the documents folder for add-ons (e.g., for v5 it is <documents>\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons).  I have GSX on both v4 and v5 but I think what I had to do was copy the FSDT add-on.xml folders from the v4 documents to v5 documents.  No need to change the actual installed files wherever you put those, the same installed files generally work for both versions with the only exception being bglmanx64.dll vs bglmanx65.dll but they can be in the same installed location.

In fact, I only have one addon installation location (d:\Addons) for both versions and most cases where there is a different install for v5 from v4 I just skip installing it for v4.  I'll probably remove v4 soon, I only keep it for PMDG DC-6 but I haven't flown it in six months.  Just too much of a difference to me between the old v4 and the way v5.1 is looking now.

There's no reason to do anything manually.

If both P3D4 and 5 are installed ( no matter where they are ), the GSX installer ( provided it's one that supports both ), will add it to both assuming both are properly installed.

With "properly installed", I mean that P3D cannot be moved after the installation from a drive to another without uninstalling it and reinstalling it, because this will result in its registry keys not being updated and still pointing to the old location, and the GSX installer needs to read the registry to know where P3D is installed, for a few things like disabling the default jetway model and pushback truck, and calling P3D itself to activate the add-on.xml. Also, the Live Update will also need to check the registry, to know if each simulator is installed.

Assuming each P3D version is properly installed, the GSX installer will surely create an add-on.xml for both, and it will always go in the Documents folder for each sim. Regardless where each version of the sim is installed, it will always use the Documents folder on your user account drive, and since we point to the absolute path of the Addon Manager ( which is only one ), it's completely irrelevant where each simulator is located, since we don't install anything in the simulator own folder.

I had both on my PC for a just over a month no problem FSDT airports and GSX are not installed in the sim but linked, then i uninstalled 4.5.3 again no problem did not affect my FSDT install, if all addons worked like this updating would be easy.

That was my experience too. I just ran the latest GSX installer and it installed fine into v4 and v5 without any issues. As per Dan's comments , there's a single folder outside the sim that is used for GSX.

Chuck- when you say it doesn't appear in v5, can you clarify? GSX in the Add-on menus within the P3Dv5 sim is missing or something else???

Also may be you can confirm the path in which the Add-On Manager is installed?
