December 24, 20205 yr Hiking and backpacking and fly fishing were life long recreations. I got to old to pursue them any longer. Tomorrow I turn 87. But the point is if you want to go out of town into the mountains and enjoy wilderness activities a personal vehicle is the only way to get there. As for biking. I have a stationary bike for my daily exercise. 20 minutes a day...about 5 miles. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
December 25, 20205 yr A few pages ago a question was raised regarding the uproar if there were 1.3 million deaths annually from rock climbing and yet vehicular deaths are "acceptable". Could this be more to do with the fact that rock climbing is a hobby, a sport whereas cars and other road going vehicles are tied into the transport infrastructures tightly woven into the majority of societies throughout the world. i.e. 1.3 million is acceptable because .... transportation?? Yes, there are of course motorsports too. Not having a go, I just though it was another aspect of this interesting debate.🍻 IMO automatics can be a lot of fun.. if there's a glut of torque being produced by the engine (IC) thus making for rapid acceleration and vicious upchanges even on a three-speed. Yes, back to large displacement, eight-cylinders-in-a-vee muscle. (Electric motors of course don't need multi speed transmissions depending upon their torque output and max rpm..)
