Horrible Frame Rate No Matter What

Featured Replies

Hey all, so I've been loving FS2020 since it's launched.

When I run it on my index, I get terrible frame rates that don't seem to change much.

my computer is a rtx2080 super 8700k  32gb ram.  Vr in general runs great - aka my sim racing games.

But Even when I turn everything off or on low - including downscaling to 40% and AA off - I get 30-40fps.  If I turn scaling up to 80% and AA onto the highest setting, I get 40fps, sometimes up to 45.  And it's SUPER choppy.

Obviously there's a bottleneck somewhere going on - but has anyone else experienced this? My computer temps are fine btw.

I’ve seen a few reports of Index problems. Not an HMD I own, but makes me wonder if steamVR headsets are poorly supported at the moment?

Is anyone running an Index with good results?

yes me, and it runs great and smooth, but the diference is i run a 3090 and there was a SteamVR hotfix a few hours ago:

SteamVR Hotfix 1.15.16
SteamVR has been updated with the following changes.

If you encounter issues with this update, please post in the SteamVR Bug Report forum. If possible, please include a system report to aid in tracking down your issue. Replies to this post are not tracked for bug reporting purposes. Please use the forum linked above to report issues.

Note: Some users with NVIDIA GPUs are experiencing dropped frames with SteamVR 1.15. If you encounter this issue on a 10xx or 20xx card, consider rolling back your GPU drivers to 446.14. This resolved the issue for many people.

Oculus:
  • Fixed issue with head position on Quest and Quest 2 that appeared in 1.15.15.

try resetting msfs VR graphics to default, as this seems to help some people, even if they are already un touched.

try resetting steam vr setting back to default

is the index considered a steam VR product? could try beta below

https://www.vive.com/us/support/vive/category_howto/optin-to-steamvr-beta.html

Thanks for the suggestion - I've tried doing a back to default but no luck.  - I believe the index is a vr product, I oculd try that too.

I ran this update, to no avail sadly. I've also filed a bug report.

I just updated drivers this afternoon AFTER I had this issue - Is 446.14 the very last driver? Or is it multiple versions back?  If it's the last version, then I tested it on that version before updating and testing it on the new.

Thanks for the idea - I rolled back to this driver to no avail sadly.

I, too, have an Index and was very disappointed in the performance of the VR in MSFS.  Just sitting in an aircraft, not even flying, was very glitchy. Regardless of settings, it did not seem to improve and was just not meeting my expectations or experience with other games.

My system is more than enough for VR and performs well with Prepar3D, Aerofly, and a number of other games without any pauses, glitches, and is very smooth.  Not so with MSFS.  My system contains: Intel i7-6700K @ 4.0Ghz, Gigabyte Fatal1ty mobo, 16G RAM, EVGA RTX2070 Super w-8GB RAM.

Based on this thread I uninstalled my current nVidia 461.09 drivers, then installed the 446.14 drivers with the Clean option checked.  Lo and behold I can actually fly now!  The glitching is mostly gone with a number of the VR settings being in the medium range.  I am thinking I will be able to work on the settings to get even smoother and better performance.

Expecting a change for the worse, I re-installed the 461.09 driver, again with the Clean option checked, and quite surprised that the performance remained the same as the older driver and the glitching is gone!  I will now spend some time just tweaking a setting here and there and testing the performance.

Just as a heads up: I found the most performance draining options are the density sliders for the autogen. But that should probably be of no surprise.

Keep in mind when reading other people's results that the terms "good" and "smooth", etc. are highly subjective.  With my Index I've done probably all the tweaks (including installing the latest nVidia driver which DOES seem to help) and can get my 2080Ti and i9 @5Ghz to run in VR at what the sim tells me is a pretty steady 45fps. But regardless of what it says, I just can't play it for extended amounts of time.  Being kind and ignoring the stutters that often crop up during maneuvering, even during my "smooth" runs at "45fps" there's a kind of low frequency judder that always feels like it's pulling at my eyes.  It's is nothing like the smoothness that I can get from sims like VTOL and X-Plane 11.5 and much more similar to DCS, which I've never been able to play comfortably in VR.  Naturally, lowering the settings helps, but it doesn't take much to lose out on most of the scenic value that makes FS unique.  I'm hopeful that MS can eventually do better than Eagle Dynamics, but until they do, I'm mostly back to X-Plane in VR for now (but will be checking back on FS regularly).
