Yes, I get somewhat annoyed by the very noisy cameras clattering away during press conferences, and other public events.

These days, cameras do not need to make shutter noises as they are mostly digital. - no mechanical shutters. Mostly. I mean there are possibly some photographers out there who still use mechanical shutters, but I would not have thought that there would be very many.

Are the press conference shutter noises fake? Do the cameras play a shutter sound just becuase it's ingrained into our expectations? Some time ago - may have been last year, not sure. I had an xray taken of my back due to a previous episode. Pleased to say that it was reported that nothing untoward was seen with the vertebra, the alignment was good. Nor was there anything suspicious an xray might pick up. Anyhow, I digress. The new-looking Samsung xray machine made a shutter noise as the photos were taken  It made me chuckle.

Who knows? My digital camera certainly does not, but then it isn't one of the much more sophisticated cameras the press uses.

Whatever the case however, the rapid-fire clicking from dozens upon dozens of photographers taking pictures quite often manage to make it nearly impossible to actually hear the person(s) speaking!

Digital cameras can do without shutters. Trouble is, additional circuitry is then required. And additional circuitry takes up space. Thus smaller sensor.

Mechanical shutters with for example DSLR's do offer advantages. They are usually a combination of electronic means plus the mechanical shutter. Not sure if they are still focal plane shutters though. Or if leaf shutters in the lens are sometimes used. I'm guessing still focal plane.

The other advantage of having a shutter with an audible noise, or a fake noise, is that the photographer has confirmation that the shot has been taken. With no audible confirmation, any failure to shoot would be missed..
