November 27, 200619 yr I can fly beautifully for at least 1-1/2 hours in FSX - a brand new, almost state of the art machine, most all sliders fully to the right, a steady 25 fps at 2560x1600 resolution, etc. I just love it. BUT then, usually 1-1/2 to 4 hours into a flight, FSX will slow to a crawl. Frame rates will drop precipitously to 1-2 fps Robert Chartoff
November 27, 200619 yr I'm no expert-but are you short on hard drive space? Maybe your swap file is getting larger and larger as you fly-and then you hit the limit?http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
November 27, 200619 yr Geofa, an interesting thought - and where I started a week ago. But all seems to check out. I've got 300 GB of empty space on my 500 GB RAID 0 setup so space shouldn't be a problem. Also, I've tried a System managed page file size as well as custom sizes and it seems to make no difference. There is one strange thing here, however, and perhaps it's relevant. I started out with a custom size page file based on Windows' indicating that I had 3043MB available for this file and I set the min and max for this. After encountering my fps problem, I made some inquiries and was advised that given my 2GB of RAM, Windows should be reflecting 3069 or 3070MB for this page file size. I tested my RAM and it checked out and I couldn't figure out why Windows was giving me this small a page file size. I then reset the page file size to 3070MB but still had the fps problem. Then, after contacting MS Support, they recommended that I try a System Managed page file size. But the problem continues.BTW, it was fun to see you join this thread. I've followed your postings with interest for years now and often wondered if we'd ever cross paths. Thanks for the input.Robert Robert Chartoff
November 27, 200619 yr Thanks for the kind words. I am using system managed page file on my end too. I hope you find an answer to your problem...http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
November 27, 200619 yr Moderator Geofa - I seem to recall way back in early days of FS9 that a similar problem cropped up, especially when changing views often during a long flight. It was related to autogen continually redrawing the same area. I don't recall the thread(s) nor the suggested fix but it might give you a place to start looking.Sorry for the sketchy info - memory is first thing to go. I forget what's next. :)Good luck,VicVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/ RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
November 27, 200619 yr I've had a simlair problem, although it's not consistent and slightly different to your problem Robert. Whilst sitting at Helsinki's Vantaa I got the out of memory message too and the sim just locked up and eventually froze. This has now happened at least 3 times. My system specs areIntel Core2Duo E6600 2x2.60Ghz2GB RAM250GB Hard DiskNvidia 7900GTX 512MBI can't explain it either, no rhyme or resaon. FSX has sure got a lot of bugs so it would seem.
November 27, 200619 yr Hi Robert,It would be interesting to know what addons you are using with FSX? I have experienced the same thing with FS9 and was almost always due to an Afcad file, and also could be a conflict with numerous addons. such as the Super 80 from coolsky that I fly. I am unable to use it along with U.T USA for some reason without an OOM error altough I have plenty of unused memory according to the task manager. Ofcourse if you are running FSX right out of the box none of this would apply, and the best thing I could suggest would be to make sure your system is clean of any Viruses and , or Spyware although I highly doubt that this would cuase an OOM error with your amount of ram!In any case I hope you are able to find an answer for your problem.Regards,Chris
November 27, 200619 yr Arun, if what happened to you occurred after moving your plane to a new airport after flying around a bit, I've encountered that as well. I make it a practice to start each flight with a new launch of FSX and that avoids this problem.Robert Robert Chartoff
November 27, 200619 yr Chris, I do have some addons but I've got a friend who runs the very same ones on a similar machine and doesn't experience this problem. All I've added is the FS Genesis mesh for the entire world and Cloud9's xClass Europe. I also recently added the desert texture fix and MyWorld Landclass, but the problem existed before these addons were installed. Robert Robert Chartoff
November 27, 200619 yr Hasn't happened to me yet. However I took FS9 for a spin yesterday. KTPA addon (Fly Tampa) with UT to KATL using PMDG 737-800. I was using MyTraffic 2006 (I had purchased the FSX version and the 2006 FS9 version came with it). This was a night flight using UT's unbeatable night lighting I think FS9 still rocks supreme for city night flying (I tried porting over UT to FSX and only using the night lighting - although it was beautiful as usual it ground FSX to a halt). Total time was roughly two hours but as I was turning to final at KATL it froze. I heard a beep, hit the window key and there on the desktop was an out of memory error. In FSX no out of memory yet. I flew yesterday CYWG to KMSP with PMDG 1900D 70% AI for MyTraffic X autogen normal. Low framerates but no out of memory. But I've seen a review recently for FSX where the reviewer jacked up several settings in FSX and ended up getting an out of memory error. Don't know what's happening.By the way, the max memory in FSX I've used so far with very high settings in bush flying is roughly 1.6 gigs. A long way from 2 gigs.P4 3.6 GHz HT, 2 gigs ddr 533 ram, ATI X800XT 256 mb PCIe.
November 27, 200619 yr Len, I'm seeing even lower memory usage than you are. Your settings must be even more extreme than mine. I have 2GB of low latency DDR2 800 RAM and am running a Core 2 Duo E6700. My indicated memory usage for FSX is about 1.2GB with the rest of the machine using about 250MB. This leaves about 500MB to spare when getting the frame rate drop or the out of memory error.Robert Robert Chartoff
November 27, 200619 yr Yes Robert. I have experienced the same problem more than once. 25+ FPS, and then down to 1-2 FPS. Sometimes you get an out of memory error, sometimes not. This is odd because normally FSX will not use more than 1GB and I have a 2GB system.Workaround: when you experience the problem, save the flight. Reload FSX and the saved flight. Not a great solution, but better than starting the flight over again.I should also mention that all but essential processes and services have been turned off on my rig, and at the time the problem occurs, no other processes appear to be interfering with FSX.RichPS. Well, I might crank down autogen one notch from time to time. But it is absolutely gorgeous for bush flying using default planes with real weather. Flyable but not great framerates - 12 ave. but sometimes when over lakes and less autogen in view it will pop up to 20 fps plus. I use MemStatus and close to 1.6 gigs was the absolute max so far.
November 27, 200619 yr Well, knowing that some others with similar machine specs are also experiencing this problem is somewhat comforting, if that is the proper word. Maybe less distessing is a better description. I was about to start swapping out my RAM and then my video card (XFX nVidia GeForce 7950 GT 512MB). Now it seems this may not be necessary as the problem seems to be software related and not due to a defective component. No one has commented so far on the screenshot issue. I suspect this might have to do with my running at 2650x1600, although those who use TripleHead2Go use an even higher res and I've seen no reports of their having this problem. It seems likely, to me anyway, that this is all part of the same problem, whatever it might be.Robert Robert Chartoff
