February 4, 20215 yr Simple question really should i go with a 1000w or 1200w psu to put in my system? It will have an amd5950x cpu and a evga 3090 ftw3 gpu, a rog crossfire hero mobo. Thanks Pete Little
February 4, 20215 yr the latest 3090 ftw3 bios have PTmax 450W some have 500W the 5950x heavy load 350W OC 1000W shuold be ok but on the edge , i should go for 1200W have similar system use EVGA Supernova 1600W http://
February 4, 20215 yr I have the 3090 FTW3 plus a 10900K. The minimum requirement acording to Nvidia is 750 Watts. I went for 1000 Watts which is ample. If you are going to opt for the hefty OC BIOS and like a PSU that has plenty of headroom maybe 1200 as Westman said. For the 500W OC BIOS EVGA recomend an 850 Watt PSU as minimum. I'm not opting for the OC BIOS as its intended for serious, heavy overclockers like Westman. So quite happy with QUALITY 1000 Watt PSU. We have a new BETA BIOS that increases the maximum Power Target. This BIOS is only intended for the extreme overclocking user and does not have any other changes. Please note the following: - This update will increase the power consumption while overclocking, and is recommended you have adequate cooling and power (850w+ Gold minimum) when using this. - EVGA does not guarantee any performance increase or overclock while using this BIOS update Edited February 4, 20215 yr by martin-w
February 4, 20215 yr Author Hi Martin, They are offering me the corsair rm1000 as a replacement.Whats your thoughts? I dont plan on heavy oclocking the gpu it should be good at basic or with a slight oclock. I do plan on fiddleing with the cpu oclocking it a bit Thanks for any help on this Pete Pete Little

With decent headroom. Corsair are a good brand for PSU's, The RM 1000 would be fine. 89% efficient at 75% load. Single rail at 83.3 Amps. Personally though, I'm a fan of EVGA power supplies. I'm yet to have one fail, they have a ten year warranty and EVGA support is great. I believe the Corsair PSU has a ten year warranty too. https://www.corsair.com/corsairmedia/sys_master/productcontent/RMx_Manual.pdf

February 4, 20215 yr Author I take it you mean the gpu has a heavy overclock bios or is it the cpu that has a heavy overclock. This has kind of threw me a bit and im playing catch up Pete Little
February 4, 20215 yr You be fine with 1000W , the powertarget with std bios is 420W and the CPU 250 + load all cores , then approx 100w other then headroom +30% its 1000W Edited February 4, 20215 yr by westman http://

It's only intended for those that are interested in extreme overclocking. The standard power target the card comes with, as Westman said, is 420 watts. The OC BIOS pushes it right up to 500 Watts. You aren't interested in heavily overclocking your graphics card, so you wont be installing the OC BIOS and thus, a 1000 Watt PSU is perfectly adequate. Edited February 4, 20215 yr by martin-w
February 4, 20215 yr Author Thanks guys for all the info I think i may be ok with a 1000 as im not planning on extreme o/clocking maybe just a nudge on the all core cpu by 100 -200 hz or so, if i could get the all core to 4.6 or 7 i would be very happy but i know ryzens are a bit twitchy and hot Pete Little
February 4, 20215 yr i don't run the same CPU, but do run that GPU. CPU @ 4.7 ish. I have the RM1000x. Been perfectly fine. 5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW and 2 22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU, 360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next
February 4, 20215 yr I find this power supply calculator rather good... https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator You can enter your CPU overclock frequency, voltage for both CPU and GPU. Fans, drives, the lot. Pretty decent estimate in my opinion.
February 4, 20215 yr Author Well guys, I thought i would put an update out there I think i may have won a prize on this, as they have offered me an evga 1300w supernova g2 It looks like it does not have as many cables as the rm 1000x, but i m not sure i need all the extra cables anyway It also gives me an extra 100 w over the hx1200i that i had originally selected. Any thoughts guys? Pete Little

Any thoughts guys? Actually the 1300 G2 is a VERY nice PSU! 👍 And would give you plenty of headroom. In fact, I have two PSU's, an EVGA 1000 Watt G2+ that I was intending for my build, but I also have an EVGA 1200 Watt P2. Think I'll keep the 1200.... actually, I may keep both and have the 1000 Watt as a spare. Edited February 4, 20215 yr by martin-w
February 4, 20215 yr Author Thanks for the confirmation Martin, I kind of thought i had won a watch but to keep the build happening on time, i was under a bit of pressure to make a decision. While doing a bit of research i found that my original choice of psu ( hx1200i) some of them have been recalled by corsair for problems powering up. This maybe the reason that i had to choose another psu. Scan seem to be doing a good job,so perhaps my decision to let them build it was the correct one. Otherwise I would be stuck waiting for parts again. Have you built your system yet? Or are you still awaiting parts Cheers Pete Little
