February 24, 20215 yr Author Oh yes, I read about the code this morning. Aparently the patterns also serve the purpose of alerting mission control to the angle the parachute has deployed and whether its twisted. I think the capabilites the parachute are overlooked by the media but it's actually quite an achievent to deploy a parachute at 1000 miles per hour and have it remain intact and functioning perfectly.

I don't know how they'll be ranking this flight: Neil Armstrong did manually fly and land Apollo 11 LM-5 Eagle on the Moon. So maybe not technically a first flight on another world. Ingenuity is reported healthy and functioning as designed, so far. I hope the demo will be successfull!
February 24, 20215 yr Author Oh right. That's a surprise. I understood it could be a month or two before the first flight. That's an artist illustration posted of course. I'm sure you know. 🙂 Edited February 24, 20215 yr by martin-w
February 26, 20215 yr What am I missing here? Back when a certain entrepreneur by the name of Elon Musk decided to strap his Tesla Roadster atop one of his rockets instead of a simple lump of ballast he was not allowed to have it crash into Mars. Contaminating another planet etc. Yet NASA were allowed to crash their SkyCrane... For one, there was no benefit at all for crashing the roadster into Mars, while the Skycrane was helping with actual exploration and research. Plus, I bet it would have been basically impossible to properly sanitize the roadster to avoid contaminating Mars. Launching the roadster out past Mars was enough of a PR stunt to prove how powerful the Falcon Heavy design is.

Ah, that makes more sense, but still, we've fly tipped some of our junk on another planet in the name of science..
