P3Dv4 low FPS

@pelgrin21 I have already tried the affinity mask with different (also with calculated) settings, unfortunately that didn't work for me:(

Next Test: EDDF, Aerosoft Addon Airport installed: Outside View: 38 FPS / Cockpit View 22 FPS

Adding AiTraffic: And this finally brings down to 18 FPS in Outside View and 10 FPS in Cockpit View.

Does that really mean that it is impossible to use Ai Traffic in the simulator?

Therein lies the problem. What Ai package are you using?

I use AIG and the models are optimised for 64-bit.

Me too, I also created the ai traffic by myself, I used the FLAi aircraft package

If you have a paid version of FSUIPC you can set a limiter for the number of Ai to ensure 30fps is tried for.

But why are you creating Ai traffic yourself when there are packages that will do it for you?

Maybe created was the wrong word. I used the aircrafts included in the FLAi package and connected them to their flightplans, a lot of work but in my opinion it's worth it. Now I have traffic all over the world flying based on summerflightplan 2018 and 2019.

I will try that with FSUPIC as well, maybe it helps. If you, or somebody else has more ideas how to improve the FPS, as mentioned I would be happy with 20 FPS constantly, please feel free to tell me.

Thank you all for your Support

It’s all about balance. Add too much and the fps will suffer. If your monitor can support 1920*1080 @30Hz try that as the demands in the GPU are lessened.

I have a 8th generation CPU with a 1080Ti, run at 4K and can manage at most airports except Heathrow etc. Limiting Ai is what works for me.

Ray, can you tell me how are your FSUIPC Traffic settings? Where have you usually set the limits? And do you know where I can change my monitor refreshing rate?

  • Moderator

Nvidia Control Panel for refresh rate. If your monitor supports it the change will work. If it doesn’t you’ll see a black screen for several seconds after which the original display will show. Check your user manual to see if 30Hz is possible. There are ways to get 60Hz to run at 30Hz but others can advise there.

The FSUIPC manual gives details on how to configure Ai settings.

Ok, thank you very much for your time, I own you a beer😅 If I should be in GB after COVID. Thanks a lot

Since you said you would be ok with 30 fps most places, I would try to refresh at 30hz if you could.  Right click on desktop, select display settings, scroll down, click on Advanced Display Settings, scroll down to where it says "Refresh Rate" and there will be a dropdown, with the refresh rates your monitor supports.

If you have to refresh at 60hz that's ok.  Right click on desktop, select nvidia control panel, select "Manage 3D Settings" and then for Max Frame Rate select 30.

Now your Cpu0 likely won't be at 100% with your 747-800 loaded in a remote location.

What is happening is, at your 60hz refresh, P3Dv4 is attempting to maintain 60 fps because vsync is on.  The cpu can't maintain 60 fps *with your settings* when you have the 747-800 + complex airport + AI going.  But 30 fps...that is a lot more do-able.  Some of your settings like LOD radius are higher than what I typically run, when I'm running complex addons.  But you may find that at 30hz refresh or 30 fps driver-level frame lock, you might well be able to keep LOD radius quite high.

With P3Dv4 you don't really want cpu0 to hit 100%.  Once that happens the sim can stutter and other bad things could happen, like textures dropping (blurries).

As a side note, P3Dv5 handles this a little better.  I mean, you still would have to watch settings with complex add-ons loaded, but not quite to the level of P3Dv4.

hope that gives you additional insight

Elias,

Try this test and see how your system compares to mine.

  • Load the Piper Cub and relocate to EDDM 08R assuming you have the Aerosoft Mega Airport package.
  • Turn off VSync and set Frame Rate to unlimited.
  • Close any weather program so you have blue skies.
  • Set your traffic slider to 100% for Airline Traffic.
  • Local time should be 12:00.
  • Set Spot Plane view so you're behind the Cub looking down 08R with the airport visible to the left.

I have 44 Ai on the Ground with 52 Airborne. My fps is 53.4. CPU1 Core is 95%

If I then enable VSync with Triple Buffering enabled and change the clock back 3 mins to force a reload of Ai the numbers change to:-

Ground 47, Airborne 59, fps 30, CPU1 drops to 56-60%.

Whilst the number of Ai hasn't changed much (indicating most aircraft are visible) the load on CPU1 has dropped significantly resulting in a much smoother sim.

This is possible because my monitor supports 30Hz. I cannot overstate how important this is to ensure a smooth sim with stutters minimised to the point where they are rarely seen. Even after loading the PMDG737NGX and remaining in spot view the CPU1 load is 65%. Switching to an internal left-seat view with no equipment on the CPU1 load is 78%.

You can display the count of Ai on the Ground by opening FSUIPC - Logging tab. On the right enter 02A2 in the offset and S8 as the Type. Check FS Title Window for the reading to be shown in the title bar.

To see airborne Ai change the offset to 02A4.

If your fps is significantly different to mine I would question whether your Ai package is the same quality as the AIG one.

A further bit of info. I set my monitor to 60Hz and with the Cub at EDDM (as above) the fps is 53 but the CPU1 is running at 98-100%. Stutters inevitable and that's with a default Cub, A third party aircraft would be significantly worse.

@Mace Hey, thank you for your reply, I have tried your advise, but I'm not sure if it made a difference, if, then it is not huge. I will keep the FPS limited to 30 for now and see how it works. Regarding P3Dv5, as written above this might help but is not a real option simply because of the huge amount of money which I would need to invest again for addons I already have.

@Ray: I we try this we need to choose another airport, I use Taxi2Gate EDDM.

55 AC Ground / 47 AC Air / FPS 39 / CPU "0" 100%

Adding: VSync+Triple Buffering On: 55 AC Ground / 47 AC Air / FPS 40 / CPU "0" 100%

Adding: PMDG 737NGX: 55 AC Ground / 47 AC Air / FPS 37 / CPU "0" 100 %

Left Seat: FPS 21 / CPU "0" 100 %

Strange, as soon as I click on Task Manager (P3dv4 goes in Background) My CPU "0" load reduces to 20%

Doesn’t make much difference. Still a major airport with multiple Ai.

In all of your reports CPU1 is locked at 100%. That’s the problem. In FSUIPC set the minimum number of Ai to 50. FSUIPC will then delete Ai (furthest away first) to try to get the fps up to 30.

What make and model is your monitor?
