A personal curiosity (damage on fs2020)

Featured Replies

NO ! I don't care if the damage model of fs2020 is "really realistic" compared to xplane or p3d standards  , I'm curious about one simple trivial stupid thing perhaps already discussed but I have not looked very back........
how many keep the "damage" off\on ? personally I think it is more satisfying to see "what happens" if I do a stupid thing and the plane "bounce around" even if very unrealistic or unplausible if you prefer .

I use "other simulators" so anyway I know what we're talking about even if I'm a bit "light\casual on fs2020" ,  the black screen "blablabla you are death and you have brought with you millions of € \ CHF \ $ \ R \ etc.of aircraft never satisfied me. I want to see "WHAT HAPPENS" well let's say I want to see what happens in the simulator \ game, in reality most of the time it would be a deadly fireball ..... but we know this .

So who keeps the crashes active and who doesn't? And what are the reasons?

I keep crash detection off because this digital world is finicky and literally a single thing misprogrammed can mean a hidden square block in the middle of a taxiway that the dev forgot to pull out after troubleshooting is now an aircraft-destroying obstacle. Besides, have you seen the state of some runways and taxiways at some airports??? That terrain is enough to collapse a landing gear!

In fact, I thought I was safe from this issue in MSFS after years in FSX...but then I went over a bridge in Narita that went over water, and I got the Splash message even though I was still on the bridge.

I personally see no point flying with damage turned off.  Part of the challenge for me of flying something like the CJ4 is avoiding overspeed, Part of the challenge of flying the G91 is avoiding damage to flaps and gear if you do not retract them.  Part of the challenge of landing correctly in a slippery aircraft is avoiding pushing the aircraft on to the runway planting the nose wheel and breaking it.

It would be nice if the damage model was a little more refined though.  In particular modelling engine damage from abuse the way the new corsair does should be implemented for all aircraft.

Personally I only turn it off for specific things like flying under bridges (where there is an invisible wall) and turn it back on afterwards.

Which is just me, that does not mean flying with damage on is superior, or more skilled, than damage off, it is just how I like to fly, it keeps me on my toes.

It never worked right in P3D and FS, and I leave it off in MSFS 2020

I keep crashes on just to make the flight a bit more exciting, but I think that the tolerance is way higher than real life.

The first landings I did with the 787 should have generated a crater or at least a broken landing gear but I didn't get a black screen nor any insulting message.

Absolutely.

You have to virtually lawn dart in order to generate a crash even with detection enabled.

You can come in way to fast, float, push the stick forward to force the aircraft down, plant it hard enough to damage the nose wheel in a real aircraft, bounce off the runway, come down again sideways, drag a wing tip and ground loop and then finally end up back on the runway for a "successful" landing and not only fail to generate a crash but are are also fine to take off again with the aircraft still fully functional - all this with damage enabled.

If people choose to turn off crash detection that is a personal choice and perfectly fine, but if you do enable it you expect it to to work a little better than currently as it is a bit of a blunt instrument, at least with default aircraft.

Some of the Payware aircraft are better in this regard, you can damage the undercarriage and flaps on the fiat G91 if you exceed 185 knots without retracting them for example, and it is relatively easy to blow the Double Wasp on the new Corsair if you mistreat the engine.

It's off after I found an invisible trench on the runway in Florence, then another overstress because of a sudden wind change or some atmospheric glitch caused by the buggy meteo system.
Plus, In IL2 Sturmovik it's satisfying to keep damages on because you'll SEE what happened to the plane, and it will let you attempt to keep flying even if half of your plane is missing, you don't just get a black screen and a message and your flight is over, no appeals.

On a side note, the sudden, sometimes totally unexpected sound loss and that tinnitus sound that the sim makes when you "crash" was disorienting and caused some kind of physical discomfort for me.

Mods like FSPassengers (That allowed you to do belly landings, or at the very least told you how many virtual passengers you virtually murdered) and addons like the FBW (which eventually will have a robust service failures system) will - eventually - allow us to play the game with more options besides just a black screen or a rigid bounce.

That said, MSFS will never be as robust and exhilarating as DCS or KSP in this regard, and that's okay, but I don't feign disappointment. A part of me would love to try and limp a CJ4 back to the field with only one elevator or to see if I can handle a surprise asymmetrical flap deployment.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.
