April 12, 20215 yr Quote Since 1976, NASA has featured an average of 50 technologies each year in the annual publication, and Spinoff maintains a searchable database of these technologies. When products first spun off from space research, NASA presented a black and white report in 1973, titled the "Technology Utilization Program Report". Because of interest in the reports, NASA decided to create the annual publications in color. Spinoff was first published in 1976,[5] and since then, NASA has distributed free copies to universities, the media, inventors and the general public. Spinoff describes how NASA works with various industries and small businesses to bring new technology to the public. As of 2016, there were over 1,920 Spinoff products in the database dating back to 1976.[6] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_spinoff_technologies https://spinoff.nasa.gov/Spinoff2008/pdf/spinoff2008.pdf https://interestingengineering.com/15-space-age-inventions-and-technologies-we-use-everyday https://news.fit.edu/archive/space-exploration-technologies/ https://www.kqed.org/science/1944981/nine-major-innovations-you-can-thank-space-program-for I could go on and on but my wrist is playing up. 😉
April 12, 20215 yr Author The next thing you're going to tell me Martin is that without the space program we wouldn't have COVID-19 vaccine. Oh, that wonderful space program. I'm cooking a roast beef tonight with a recipe that I though came from a chef at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Little did I know it came from the space program. All of the things you mentioned would probably have happened without your glorious space program. When a need developes a solution is found to satisfy it. Henry Ford invented mass production without the space program. The Wright Brothers would never have developed powered flight if it weren't for the space program. I'm not saying the space program hasn't produced results. I'm saying it isn't the most important thing in the world. And somethings, like repairing a sick earth are MORE important. Returning the planet to a liveable condition and finding a lifestyle equilibrium where everyone's needs are satisfied are more important than building a domed colony on Mars. You are certainly evangelical when it comes to space Martin. Unfortunately planting trees in clearcut forest areas isn't as attractive to those who hold the purse strings as shiny objects shooting flames on a launching pad or the launching of a new aircraft carrier or the first flight of a new whizbang fighter.
