Received my new gear. Settings suggestions.

Featured Replies

Good morning. After a 3 month wait, i have received the new PC  I intend to use for msfs.

I have been tweaking the settings for a few hours and i have found many suggestions on the web about configurations. Some of the advice is conflicting. If any of you has a similar configuration and would like to share it I would be very grateful.

My new pc has these components:

CPU:Ryzen 9 5700x

GPU: ASUS ROG STRIX 3090.

64 gb ram.

I would like to play the game in 4k. Of course I would like great performance and great graphics. I understand that even with a more or less high end gear I am going to have to make some compromises. My oldest son (who is in his sophomore year in computer science at college) says that these components should run the game  very well, once the game is optimised (which it is not, essentially what everyone says on the forums). I do not expect a miracle, but would like to find the settings at which i can maximize the experience.

As I like to fly IFR maybe this is a little overboard, I spend most of my flying time looking inside the cabin, but this is my only vice and I have decided to indulge 🙂

Thank you very much.

Congratulations. Overcoming the penury of video cards is quite an achievement these days.

Your son is right, the game is optimized quite well as I run it with a 8 year-old machine at high and ultra settings. And the hardware is not the only parameter : your connection to the internet is an important factor.

That it is buggy and lacking essential features  is another thing.

You should have a great experience  but as usual beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. It is a trials and errors process to find the sweet spot.

Thank you very much.

The differences with my former pc (in reality an iMac) are not as big as I expected. But I knew that would probably be the case. The iMac has a 5k retina display and I had to run the sim at 2k since it didn,t provide a good experience (to say it mildly) at 5k. Now I am playing at 4k which, of course, makes a difference in itself. The new PC is going to be used almost exclusively for MSFS. I,ll have to go through trial and error. One surprising (to me) thing that my son has said is that antialiasing is much less necessary at 4K and that I should save on that when deciding the graphical settings.

Regards.

IRLATC,

That system is absolute rubbish and I strongly suggest you pack it all up (very carefully) and send it to me for appropriate disposal LOL (I will send you my shipping address ASAP)

Back to business.... Your son is correct I believe and you can set anti-aliasing to the lowest level.

MY system is nowhere near as good as yours and I am running everything at Ultra with FPS 40-45. However, I am running at 1080p and that will make a difference.

I still believe that you should get very good FPS with sliders up near maximum, at 4k with your system.  There are quite a few video tutorials on the net which provide very good guides as to what you can and cannot do.

If you are chasing FPS then sliders may have to come down but I maintain that 30 FPS is more than adequate.  Please also bear in mind, that MSFS has got some significant performance issues at the moment (for some) and pauses/stutters are common at this time.

Good Luck

Tony

My PC spec is in my sig below.

I lock FPS at 30 with RTSS.

This is what I get FPS wise when looking

Also I would surgest you use MSI Afterburner and GPU-Z and watch you mem temps.

Thank you very much. I amgoing to try disabling VSYNC and see what happens.

Thank you again.

I have a 5600x and a 3070, so a bit down on your specs.

I run it 4K with everything at Ultra (apart from changing supersampling to 4x4) , everything seems great.  The only time things seem to lag is when panning around in outside views at busy airports/cities.

Don't even bother with obsessing over frame rates!

My previous rig used to run at single figure frames in FSX-SE approaching Heathrow in the PMDG 777 - after that MSFS is a whole new world.
