South Florida

South Florida and the Keys

We'll start at Key West (KEYW) and follow US1 towards the mainland, passing the Seven Mile Bridge, Marathon and Key Largo, making stops at the few landing strips in the Keys. We then head into the Miami metropolitan area for some signtseeing, and make our way up the coast past the many resorts.  I've picked out a few interesting looking landing places, so let's go and see what's there. If we make good time we might get as far as a tour of Cape Canaveral, finishing at Space Coast Regional airport (KTIX).

Aircraft

We want to cruise around 140kts. I'll be in the Piaggio P.149D.  As usual, fly what you like.

Scenery

This flight is designed for MSFS default scenery, no downloads required.

Nick, this looks great.

One possible addon scenery, the Kennedy Space Center by Acktu, would add considerable eye candy. On Cape Canaveral it nicely represents the historic Redstone site at launch complex 5 and then two Space X landing zones with Falcon 9 boosters. Further north it depicts the Space X launch site 39A with a Falcon Heavy vehicle, the Artemis launch site 39B, as well as the massive Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) along with the Mobile Launcher and the Launch Control Center. All are visible along the selected route.

This addon is highly recommended. (You might give it a quick try before flight. Early on, some people reported problems. While there is a single brief pause as the complicated bits load in, the scenery works perfectly on my rig without any apparent performance penalty.)

After the flight, you might take a gander at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. This is remarkably good with the Rocket Garden, Hall of Heroes, IMAX Theaters, and the Atlantis Space Shuttle building all crafted in detail. (Asobo's work built-into MFS, I think.) 4 miles south of the Space Shuttle Landing Facility [KTTS].

Additional improvements can be found in West Palm Beach International by Art_P and 07FA Ocean Reef Club by JustSeanC. Both are worthwhile as they add character to the sites. (Art Poole's work is pretty good freeware if you fly in the area.) But these are for scenery afficionados rather than everyone.

That said, IMHO, everyone will be delighted to install and see the Kennedy Space Center to top off our journey.

I highly recommend Kennedy Space Center.

Thanks Mike, those all look like nice additions. I searched "Florida" and not a lot came up. I should have tried a few more keywords.

BTW. This trip might be an excuse to purchase a payware quality Key West (KEYW). The FSDreamTeam version is very good. I have it and like it. It is approximately $10.00 at FSDreamTeam site and $11.00 at Simmarket. And the Orbx version looks good too. (I don't have it.) About $7.50 at Orbx. The relevant AVSIM forum thread suggests that both are quality products (and cheap at that).

I got the Orbx version and it is nice as well. 🙂

Whatever happened to the prediction that in MSFS 2020 we would not be needing any addons, and Orbx would go out of business?  😉

Me too.

I also Silitz Bay, a favourite from waaaaay back. It's very, very good and all for loose change.

Hmmm, here are two more scenery suggestions. Neither is necessary.

The first is a modest but helpful improvement for Antiquers Aerodrome (FD08). (Only 15kb in size, this replaces the miserable default version with something more like the real airpark. Sort of famous for its Turbo Baron vlogger Skyline Baron Pilot and friend steveo1kinevo. You will know more.)

Truly flamboyant is the Guitar Hotel (Seminole Hotel and Casino). This massive 450-foot-tall glass hotel intends to become a world-famous declarative statement. (For an architect's take, go here.) Certainly worth a minute's deviation north of the designated flight path (just south of the Ft. Lauderdale airport.).

And... just went back to P3D to have a look at Key West... that was a mistake...

MSFS sure is a big step forward 🙂

Apparently there is a period of cold turkey which will subside as time goes on. Eventually the feeling goes away and you can carry on with your life. 🤪
