How do I set up NAV 2 while AP is following CDI on NAV 1?

Featured Replies

I hope this makes sense. I have been watching a few youtube videos on how to use the G1000 autopilot in MSFS, but I am stuck.

I am using the Cessna 172 with the G1000. I have NAV 1 set up with the VOR 1 frequency, and the autopilot is following the CDI to the VOR with no issues.

I now want to set up NAV 2 (ahead of time) to follow a course to VOR 2. I enter the VOR 2 frequency into NAV 2 (all is fine) but when I click on the soft button for NAV 2 (under CDI along the bottom of the G1000), and try to set the course/CDI for NAV2 to follow (again, not now at this time, but when I pass VOR 1), however, as soon as I start tuning a course with NAV 2, the autopilot starts following this new course.

Is there a way to set up NAV 2 without it affecting the autopilot.

Thanks.

Moderators, suggest moving this topic to the general MSFS forum.

Pushing the CDI button changes the active navigation device, so you can preselect the NAV2 frequency, but you should not push the CDI button until you want the NAV2 radio to be steering the autopilot.  The correct sequence is:

1. Click on the heading knob to set the heading bug to the current course

2. Change the autopilot to HDG mode

3. Click on the CDI button to select NAV2

4. Set the CDI course

5. Change the autopilot back to NAV mode.

You can also use the bearing 2 selector to show the bearing of the 2nd Nav aid you want to track, and get the double pointer displayed on the CDI display - useful for knowing you are approaching the bearing you want to intercept.
