Musicals

Featured Replies

Yesterday celebrating Independence Day were two good musicals on TCM.  The Music Man and Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Watching James Cagney sing and dance in Yankee Doodle Dandy I couldn't help seeing him as the tough guy in Public Enemy.

I thought perhaps some other tough guys on the screen could have teamed up for a musical.  Guys like Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, Humphry Bogart, and Lee Marvin tap dancing their way to Alcatraz and singing songs like, "I talk to the bars, but they don't listen to me..." stolen from "I talk to the trees, but they don't listen to me.." as sung by Clint Eastwood in Paint Your Wagon.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

The thing is Cagney started out as a hoofer. The other guys didn't. Interesting idea. I think we've been here before though.

Thought it was Lee Marvin in "Paint Your Wagon".

They were both in Paint Your Wagon.  They were partners.  And Lee Marvin did sing a song...I Was Born Under a Wanderin' Star.  Clint Eastwood sang...I Talk to the Trees.  And Harve Presnell sang...They Call the Wind Maria.

It's one of my favorite movies.

Noel, you will be pleased to know your memory is working very well. Mine is too cluttered with wondering when the rain will slow down.😄

I watched both The Music Man and Yankee Doodle Dandy.  They sure don't make them like that anymore!  So very enjoyable, and exceptionally entertaining.  Cagney was  absolutely one of the most talented actors who ever lived and the film showed the power of a song, "Over There", in its ability to inspire so many troops during WW1.  The Music Man showed the power of the mind, and belief in one's own abilities to bring joy and happiness to a town in Iowa that was quite stagnated.

"Feel Good" musicals and films help to hopefully change attitudes and behavior to societies that may seem burdened by feelings of hopelessness or other powerful negativities.  At least we can dream, can't we?

Well, Stan, you're right!  Feel good movies and musicals are what I mostly watch on television anymore.  But the old gangster movies and westerns where the good guys win in the end are worth watching too.  They all beat watching TV news.

I still enjoy watching Mickey Rooney as an angry and confused runt teenager in "Boys Town."

Don’t know if you could call Lee Marvin’s part singing. Croaking maybe. And Eastwood was smart to stick with acting after his attempt.😂
