30fps unobtainable but core 0 is not at 100%

This really has me baffled. P3Dv5.2HF1. UK2000 Gatwick for P3Dv5 and PMDG737NGXu.

My monitor is set at 30Hz and I have VSync enabled. Core 0 is not at 100% when it should be if 30fps is the target. But it's stuck around 28 and only if I terminate ASP3D resulting in clear skies will it hit 30.

How on earth is this possible. First time I've had this problem and it's stumped me.

Nvidia drivers are 471.11.

Obvious question, but is it GPU limited by something? From your description of the effect of closing AS, I guess the clouds were the problem? AA, shadows, AS settings?

Yes, sounds like GPU bound.

Agreed that clouds with ASP3D / ASCA do appear to have a significant effect. I wonder if they're still optimising them as I don't recall having these problem before. You'd think a 1080Ti could handle overcast and rain which was the case at Gatwick this morning.

FXAA is off; 4xMSAA; Anisotropic 16x and Ultra 4096 textures. Dropped to high textures but still the same problem. GPU usage was 6% with 6.3Gb in use.

I'll ask on the Hi-Fi forum especially as I'm running a beta version of ASP3D. Thanks!

Try dropping the ASCA cloud textures down to 512 for test. Should have an immediate effect if that is the case.

Time for lunch now but I shall try that later, thanks.

Hello,

just something I noticed while looking at the screenshot (most likely not the origin of the problem here). Your CPU seems to run at 4.5 GHz, in your signature you're saying that it's "overclocked" to 4.6 GHz. May I ask what settings you're using here and why? I'm confused because the default boost frequency of the i7-8086k is already 5.0 GHz (it's just a better binned 8600k with 5.0GHz all-core clock). So without touching any manual overclocking, your CPU should run way better. Maybe you have a reason why you stick with 4.6 GHz, but I've never heard the term "overclocking" when running a CPU below it's default levels, so I'm just curious 🙂

Anyway..

GPU usage seems very low, that's strange. When you say it gets better after turning AS off.. does GPU usage actually go up or will it stay at 5-6%? There must be some hiccup, because usually one of each other should max out (GPU or CPU).

As mentioned by yurei, I'm also interested in your cloud texture settings, like resolution etc.

It was a professionally built PC by Chillblast. I asked if all cores could be increased rather than just the first one which is the case with the 8086. They supplied some BIOS settings to allow that to happen but if what your saying is correct then I should turn those off and allow core 0 to run at 5.0. I forget what cores 1-5 would run at. Perhaps not as fast as they are currently. Hyperthreading is enabled of course.

I’ll look at that later and report back. I’m not sure why there’s a 0.1Ghz difference in clock speeds.

Without RTSS/MSI it’s hard to monitor GPU usage. I’ll try the test again with the time set to this morning So conditions are the same.

GPU-Z?

Never took to it. The on-screen RTSS display was perfect.

I use GPU-Z and CPU-Z and have done for years and highly recommend them - they are fairly small and definitely not bloatware and allow you to monitor frequencies, you can also save to a log file if you wish.

You might also look at the number of cloud layers.  AA applied to high-def clouds--especially across multiple layers you can't even see--has always been a heavy hit, and I never understood why high-def textures were ever needed to depict what are supposed to be fuzzy-edged irregular shaped objects anyway.

EVGA's Precision X1 software will put the GPU stats on the taskbar if you need them.

Gents,

I lowered ASCA cloud texture settings to the mimimum and flew a circuit around EGKK taking off from 08R. Time set was 08:15Z today in case any of you want to replicate things.

This time core 0 was maxxed out most of the time as there was heavy cloud cover and rain. fps stayed around 30 on the take-off roll and thereafter until I turned to intercept the localiser and land on 08R. fps dropped to mid 20s. So very different to this morning's situation with core 0 nowhere near 100%.

I need to fly this circuit a few more times to establish performance with different weather. This morning's anomaly appears to be just that.

The RTSS display was perfect for me and I really don't want extra executables overlaid on the main screen. I have just the one monitor on my P3D machine with other software running on a separate PC via WideFS.

@w6kd, I have 5 cloud layers set - the default. I'll lower it to 3 and see what difference it makes.

Finally, to answer @roesti this is what Chillblast sent me to describe the operation of the i7-8086K. Whilst core 0 will run at 5.0 the others are slower so I opted to run them all at 4.6. Whether you think that is best I'm happy to listen.

If you want to get core 1 to 5.0 GHz you will need a fair bit of tweaking in the BIOS because I doubt you'll get there with 'default' settings. If you are stable with good temps at the moment, it might not be worth the effort. I run an 8700k in 4.5 HF3 at 4.5GHz and HT on with and affinity mask and get zero stutters even though Core 0 is 100% when flying.

Chillblast said in another email that reverting to the default BIOS setting would restore core 1 to 5.0Ghz as the chart shows. No tweaking required. But cores 4-6 would run slower.

I don’t think it’s going to make that much difference to be honest.
