Possible to fly with just a Honeycomb Yoke?

Featured Replies

I plan on getting yoke, throttles and rudders. But not all at once due to obvious reasons. One being availability and the other being financial reasons. But I will start off with purchasing the yoke first. Will I be able to fly with just a yoke and no dedicated rudder pedals and throttles? That's my primary concern. How will I taxi and adjust my throttles with just a yoke?

Rudder pedals is no issue, since you can turn on auto coordination, so rudder moves with aileron.
(At least, that was possible in FS2004)

Throttles, may be a bit more challenging, since you have to use keyboard.
It all depends on what aircraft you fly. If it has auto-throttle, then I wouldn't worry too much.

I fly mostly with the FBWA320, Salty Modded 747-8, C172, C152, TBM 930, Just Flight Arrow Turbo, Xcub. If I can get by with just the yoke for now, then that would be great.

If you want to fly without trim, you could use the left 2 trim buttons as digital throttles.
Since MSFS allows button combinations, you could also sacrifice one button as a shift button and still be able to able trim on those keys as well.

I flew with just the Alpha for quite awhile while I waited for the Bravo to become available. I mounted my Xbox Controller on top of the Alpha (with Velcro) and had my throttles and brakes configured using the A, B, Y, AB, BY in what I think is the default controller settings.

For clarification they were:

A=Increase Throttle

B=Decrease Throttle

AB= Cut Throttle (I think I added this)

Y=Brake

BY=Toggle Parking Brake

I also had my keyboard setup to use the num pad for Throttle %. 1=10% through 9=90%. That helped quite a lot for controlling the throttle to a known factor.

Even though I have the Bravo unit now I'm still using the controller (now replaced by the Logitech F310) on top of my Alpha for Brakes and Toggle Parking Brake. I also use the LT and RT for Rudder Control although I do have Rudder Assist enabled. I do plan to get the Charlie Rudder once it becomes available.

Edit: Even when I get the Charlie unit I will likely keep my controller mounted right where it is as it also functions as internal/external views and as well as controlling the drone.

That sounds like a great idea. Have you tried the controller mounts for xbox controller for the honeycomb alpha? I've seen some and it looks good.

Flying without rudder pedals and throttle, to me is like driving without a gear shift and brakes. It can be done, but no fun at all.

Ha!  I use my desk for many purposes and other than my rudder pedals I do not leave my flight controls in place.  Yesterday, after installing a new GPU, and not wishing to take time to move and put my Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo into place, I flew with only rudder pedals and mouse.  Started in the G1000 (Gxi) 172.  Took off and used AP to set my headings.  I controlled flaps, brakes, throttle, and mixture with my mouse.  I have done this in earlier simulators as well.  I have landed as well and it is certainly tricky.
