There's a lot of stuff you could theoretically repair, but would need a way to jailbreak to reflash the firmware.

True Scott. That was done with printers. There was software on the Internet to reset the counter printers had/have that disables it after a given number of prints.

I'm not sure of the legality of that and how it would apply to "right to repair". Whether it would be a case of "you own the product so are entitled to mess with the software on the device, or if some kind of legal restriction would be enforceable.

The printer cartridge thing is yet another ploy we haven't discussed.

They call it the "razor - razorblade model" The handles are dirt cheap, so "yippee" you think. But then the blades cost lots.

Same with Ink jet cartridges. You get the printer for 50 of my English quid (when they are worth more) and then the cartridges cost a bomb and last five minutes, so you have to keep shelling out. And to add insult ti injury they add a chip to the cartridge that recognises incompatibility. Some cheapo cartridges work, some don't. 

The above, and the jets clogging all the time irritated me something rotten, so I bought a cheap mono laser printer which is much cheaper per print and no jets to clog if you have the audacity to not use it for a few weeks.

Often it is actually less expensive to replace the printer rather than the cartridges!

I was waiting before someone mentioned printers.

I had a printer that suddenly would not print anymore. Always used the "original" brand (otherwise constant pop-up messages). The problem was that the printer heads were "broken". This particular brand previously had the printer heads attatched to the cartridge so that with each new cartridge you had a new printer head. At the time the printer heads stopped working I had just purchased a complete new set of cartridges costing some €80. As the printer now no longer worked they were a very expensive paperweight.

After contacting the manufacturer they informed me that no replacement parts were available and could not be repaired. My only solution was to buy a new printer of the same type (so that I could use the cartridges that I bought) costing (would you believe it) €50 ! Needless to say this will be the last printer I buy from this brand.

Inkjet then. I say go for a laser printer, makes way more sense. The toner cartridges are big and are expensive, but they last for a very long time, so works out way more economical. Zero jet problems.

I'm using a cheap mono Brother printer. HL-1112 or something like that.

I got off of the inkjet bandwagon (scam) several years ago, and couldn’t be happier. I installed a mid-range laser printer in 2016, and am still using the original toner cartridge that came with it. I don’t do all that much printing, and sometimes may not print anything for weeks - but when I do, the printer works perfectly every time. Plus, it works seamlessly over the WiFi network with my desktop PC, and both IOS and Android mobile devices.

About ten years ago I bought a Samsung CLP-320 color laser printer. I've had to replace the black toner once, and the color toner cartridges are still the original that came with in the printer. It can run either with ethernet or wi-fi connections.  As best as I can recall now it cost about $280 USD. 😉

Yep, the toner lasts a very long time. 

My printer was about 140 quid. A really compact model.

I saw you posted the model. I have a similar one: a Brother HL-L2360D. It was around $400, but well worth it.

And there was me trying to be diplomatic by not mentioning the brand of printer !

For a full disclosure it was HP and used it mainly for printing photographs, so was not used every day.

My comment had more to do with the fact that HP simply stated that the printer heads were not available as parts for repair and that the solution was to by another printer from them (at full cost). Needless to say I did not take them up on their "generous"offer but still had to buy another HP printer just so that I could use the cartridges I'd already bought. When this printer stops "working", will be looking for another brand.

From what I know don't laser printers print only in black & white ? If they are able to print colour what would such a machine cost ?

Never mind just did a quick search and they do print colour- makes them quite expensive though.

400 dollar dosh notes... must have been a fancy colour one. I only need mono.

Yes, of course they said that. If manufacturers  can design stuff to get more money out of us they will.
